Austin Wells’ Bat Has Yankees Fans Losing Patience Fast

Austin Wells can catch. Nobody is saying the man forgot how to call a game.

The problem is, the Yankees are not losing sleep over his glove right now. They are staring at that bat, that stat line, and those empty at-bats, and Yankees fans are doing what Yankees fans do when a player keeps walking back to the dugout with nothing to show for it.

They are putting him on trial.

Through 53 games, Wells is sitting at .164/.268/.252 with a .519 OPS. That is not a rough week. That is not a tiny cold stretch. That is almost half a season of a catcher who has not given the Yankees much of anything with the bat.

26 hits. 2 doubles. 4 home runs. 9 RBI. 50 strikeouts.

For a lineup already trying to survive without Aaron Judge, trying to squeeze offense from everywhere, and trying not to turn every night into a 3-run scavenger hunt, that is a problem.

The Injury Reset Has Not Turned Into A Real Reset Yet

Wells landing on the 10-day IL with cervical headaches gave everybody a chance to breathe a little.

Maybe the headaches were affecting him more than people realized. Maybe the rehab assignment in Scranton would let him clear his head. Maybe the 2 home runs during that short Triple-A stop were the little spark he needed.

Then he came back, switched to the hockey-style mask, and everybody waited for the bat to wake up.

So far, not much.

Since returning, Wells has had a couple of moments, including that RBI double against Detroit, but the overall production is still sitting in the basement. Last 7 games, .118. Last 15 games, .136. Last 30 games, .130.

That is the type of stretch where fans start checking every catcher in Triple-A, every trade rumor, and probably a few retired guys just for fun.

Yankees Fans Are Not Being Quiet About It

The fan reaction has been exactly what you would expect.

“Automatic out.”

“Worst hitting catcher in baseball.”

“Why is he still playing every day?”

And honestly, when the OPS starts with a 5 and the RBI total is still sitting at 9 near the end of June, fans are not going to sit there and clap because he frames a nice strike on the corner.

That is the cruel part about being a catcher in New York. Defense buys you time. It does not buy you unlimited patience.

Yes, Wells has value behind the plate. The Yankees clearly trust him with the staff. Pitchers seem comfortable throwing to him. His receiving, blocking, and game-calling matter.

But fans are watching at-bats die in real time. They are watching rallies get heavy when his spot comes up. They are watching a lineup already missing thunder become even easier to pitch to.

The Yankees Have A Real Catcher Question Now

This is where Aaron Boone and the Yankees front office cannot just shrug and say, “He’ll be fine.”

Maybe he will be. Wells is still 26. He has shown flashes before. The walk rate is not terrible. The left-handed power has existed in the past. Nobody is saying cut the cord forever.

But the Yankees are trying to win games right now.

There is a difference between believing in a player and pretending the scoreboard is not keeping receipts. Wells was expected to be more than a defensive catcher hitting near the bottom of the order. He was supposed to be a left-handed bat with pop, patience, and enough production to make the lineup feel deeper.

Instead, the Yankees are getting defense attached to a bat that looks lost.

That puts pressure on everybody. Boone. The hitting coaches. The front office. Wells himself.

Because if this keeps going, the conversation is not going to stay polite. It is going to turn into the same question every night.

How long can the Yankees keep running Austin Wells out there before they admit the bat is costing them too much?
