Spider in the locker. Strikeouts on the mound. Just another day in Yankees camp.
You cannot make this stuff up.
In one of the more random and hilarious Yankees spring stories you will hear, Meredith Marakovits reported that Cam Schlittler needed Yankees security to remove a spider from his locker before the game.
Not a prank. Not a joke. An actual spider.
A spider was successfully extracted from my locker today. Best security team in the league! @ChatGPTapp thanks for this

Then Schlittler himself jumped in with the perfect response:
“A spider was successfully extracted from my locker today. Best security team in the league!”
That is elite clubhouse content right there.
And honestly, the fan reactions made it even better.
One fan said what a lot of people were probably thinking:
“Cam Schlittler calling New York Yankees security for spider removal might be the most relatable pregame routine ever.”
Another immediately assumed this was not some harmless little spider.
“Sure it was a black widow or one of those nasty ones!!!”
Then came the Florida reminder, because of course spring training has to come with a little extra chaos.
“Seen plenty of wolf spiders in the Tampa area. There are a lot different down here then in the northeast lol”
That part matters. Because if you are from the Northeast, the spiders down in Florida look like they are paying rent and demanding cable.
This somehow gets even funnier

What makes this even better is that there was already a spider joke attached to Schlittler last year.
Back in October 2025, during the Yankees’ postseason run, one fan cracked this line:
“I know Cam Schlittler is using spider tack, I just can’t prove it”
Now fast forward to spring camp and suddenly there is an actual spider situation in his locker.
You really cannot script this any better.

And while the spider story is funny, Schlittler’s arm is no joke
Underneath the laughs, there is a real baseball story here. Cam Schlittler has looked sharp this spring, and that is the part Yankees fans should really be paying attention to.
Through his first two Grapefruit League appearances, both starts, the 25-year-old right-hander has put up some serious numbers:
- 2-0 record
- 1.50 ERA
- 6.0 innings pitched
- 4 hits allowed
- 1 earned run
- 1 walk
- 10 strikeouts
- 0.83 WHIP
- .182 opponents’ batting average
That is not just “good spring training” stuff. That is the kind of line that gets people inside the organization paying even closer attention.
And let’s look at the stuff, because that is where this gets even more interesting.
Schlittler has been firing high-velocity fastballs that have touched 98 to 99 mph. On top of that, he has been leaning harder into a cutter in the 94 to 96 mph range, a pitch that reportedly started becoming a bigger part of his mix late last year and into the playoffs after a suggestion from Gerrit Cole.
That matters.
When a young Yankees arm starts adding a nasty power cutter, and Gerrit Cole is part of the conversation, people should notice.
The Yankees are clearly thinking bigger with him
The other key detail here is that the Yankees did not rush him this spring.
His first appearance was delayed until March 6 because the team was slow-playing his buildup after recurring lat soreness from last summer. That was the smart move. No need to force anything in February when the bigger goal is having him ready when the games start counting.
So far, that patience looks like it is paying off.
And this is coming off a rookie year in 2025 where Schlittler already gave the Yankees a lot to like. He went 4-3 with a 2.96 ERA and struck out 84 batters in 73 innings over 14 starts.
That was not smoke and mirrors. That was a legitimate young arm showing he belongs.
Now the velocity looks strong. The cutter looks real. The strikeouts are piling up. And the Yankees may have even more here than people realized.
So yes, laugh at the spider story
You should. It is funny. It is weird. It is extremely relatable. Nobody wants to open a locker and find out they are sharing it with a creature from a Florida horror movie.
But do not miss the bigger point.
Cam Schlittler is making noise this spring.
The spider may have gotten the first headline of the day, but hitters are going to be the ones with the real problem if he keeps throwing like this.
Yankees security handled the spider.
Now it is up to the rest of the league to deal with Cam Schlittler.
