Trent Grisham’s hamstring injury has opened the door for Jasson Domínguez, and now the Yankees need to find out whether The Martian is ready to keep it open.
The Yankees’ outfield injury situation somehow found another name.
New York placed Trent Grisham on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a right hamstring strain and activated Jasson Domínguez following his rehab assignment with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Grisham suffered the injury during Friday night’s 8-5 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre. He drove in two runs with a single in the sixth inning, advanced toward second base on the play and began slowing down before sliding into the bag.
He was removed immediately, and the Yankees did not waste much time making the roster move.
Prior to today’s game, the Yankees made the following roster moves:
• Placed OF Trent Grisham on the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain.
• Returned OF Jasson Domínguez (#24) from his rehab assignment and reinstated him from the 10-day injured list.— New York Yankees (@Yankees) June 13, 2026
Another important Yankees outfielder goes down
Losing Grisham is not a small inconvenience for this team.
Even when his bat has gone through quiet stretches, Grisham has given the Yankees reliable defense in center field, power from the left side and another option near the top of the lineup.
He also entered 2026 coming off the best power season of his career, hitting 34 home runs in 2025 and forcing his way into a much larger role than many expected.
Now he joins an injured list that already includes Aaron Judge, leaving the Yankees without two important pieces of their regular outfield.
The Yankees have continued finding ways to win despite the injuries, but there is a point where all these missing players begin catching up to a roster. Grisham was not just another bench player. He was handling center field and receiving regular at-bats for a team sitting near the top of the American League East.
Jasson Domínguez finally gets another opportunity
Here comes Jasson Domínguez again.
The 23-year-old returns after being sidelined with a sprain of the AC joint in his left shoulder. Domínguez suffered the injury after crashing into the outfield wall while making a catch in early May.
His first stint with the Yankees this season was brief. Domínguez hit .200 with 1 home run and 4 RBI in 30 at-bats before landing on the injured list.
Those numbers do not tell us much. The sample was too small, and Domínguez never had enough time to settle into a real everyday role.
That excuse is gone now.
The Yankees have an opening. Grisham is injured. Judge is unavailable. Spencer Jones is also receiving an opportunity in the outfield. There should be enough playing time for Domínguez to get consistent at-bats instead of appearing once every few days and being expected to immediately produce.
This is exactly the kind of opportunity Yankees fans have been asking for.
The Yankees need more than flashes from The Martian
We have already seen the power. We have seen the speed. We have seen the talent that made Domínguez one of the most discussed prospects in baseball before he ever reached the Bronx.
Now the Yankees need consistency.
Domínguez does not have to carry the offense or replace everything Grisham and Judge provide. He simply has to play under control, give the Yankees quality at-bats and show he can handle regular work in the outfield.
There will be strikeouts. There will be mistakes. That comes with playing a young player.
But the Yankees cannot keep talking about Domínguez’s potential forever. At some point, they need to give him the runway to prove whether he belongs in the lineup for good.
That runway has arrived because of another unfortunate injury.
Grisham will hopefully need only a short stay on the injured list, but hamstring injuries can be tricky, especially for an outfielder expected to cover ground in center.
Until he returns, Domínguez has a real chance to make the Yankees think twice about taking him out of the lineup.
The Martian is back. Now it is time to see what he does with the opportunity.
