One Pitcher Could Decide USA vs Dominican Republic in the WBC Semifinal

I’m Dominican. I was born and raised in the United States. So when Team USA and the Dominican Republic meet in the World Baseball Classic… you can imagine the internal debate.

Let me start by saying this: I’m Dominican. Born and raised in the United States, but Dominican blood runs through the veins. So when Team USA faces the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic semifinals, people assume you have to pick a side.

Honestly? I’m fine with whoever wins.

This is baseball at its best. Two powerhouse rosters, a packed stadium in Miami, and a matchup that could easily feel like a championship game instead of a semifinal.

But let’s be realistic here.

At least to start this game, Team USA has the upper hand.

The Paul Skenes Problem

The Dominican Republic is walking into this matchup facing one of the most dominant young pitchers the sport has seen in years.

Paul Skenes isn’t just good. His numbers look like something pulled out of a video game.

  • 55 career MLB starts
  • 1.96 career ERA
  • 320.2 innings pitched
  • 386 strikeouts
  • 0.95 WHIP
  • Just 21 home runs allowed

That last stat might be the scariest one for the Dominican lineup.

Skenes has allowed only 21 homers in over 320 innings. That’s a ridiculous 0.59 HR/9 rate — elite even among Cy Young caliber pitchers.

And speaking of Cy Young… he already won one in 2025.

If Skenes can go deep into this game — even 4 to 6 dominant innings — Team USA immediately puts pressure on the Dominican Republic.

Luis Severino Faces a Huge Moment

And that’s where the other side of this story comes in.

Former Yankees right-hander Luis Severino gets the ball for the Dominican Republic.

Severino is now a veteran at 32 years old. His career numbers are solid, even if the last couple seasons have been a little uneven.

  • 73–55 career record
  • 3.92 ERA
  • 1,072 innings pitched
  • 1,073 strikeouts
  • 1.21 WHIP

He’s had flashes of brilliance during his career — especially during his Yankees peak in 2017 and 2018 — but he’s also been vulnerable to hard contact at times.

Luis Severino’s career has been a rollercoaster because of injuries. When he’s healthy, the talent is obvious. The problem is he hasn’t always stayed on the field. The biggest hit came in 2019 when shoulder inflammation and a lat strain wiped out almost the entire season. Then in 2020 he underwent Tommy John surgery, costing him another full year. Since then, it’s been smaller but still frustrating setbacks — oblique strains, lat issues, and other arm soreness that have interrupted stretches where he was pitching well. Severino is now 32 and experienced, but durability has been the biggest question mark of his career. When he’s right, he can still dominate. The challenge has always been staying healthy long enough to do it consistently.

And that’s where this matchup gets interesting.

Team USA is the away team in this game. That means Severino has to open the game strong immediately. No easing into it.

If the United States jumps on him early, the Dominican Republic could be playing catch-up against Skenes. That is not a position you want to be in.

The USA Lineup Has Already Shown Its Power

Some of Team USA’s biggest bats have already seen Luis Severino before — and a few of them have had success.

  • Aaron Judge: 3-for-5 (.600), HR
  • Bryce Harper: 2-for-5, 2 HR
  • Kyle Schwarber: 3-for-9
  • Cal Raleigh: 3-for-9, HR
  • Bobby Witt Jr.: 2-for-10

Small sample size, sure. But the power potential is obvious. One mistake pitch and this lineup can change the game fast.

Judge alone changes the entire dynamic of an inning.

One mistake pitch from Severino and the entire stadium energy flips.

And make no mistake — this game is being played in Miami, which means the Dominican crowd is going to be loud.

But Don’t Sleep on the Dominican Bullpen

If the Dominican Republic can keep this game close early, their bullpen might become the real weapon.

This group has been absolutely nasty throughout the tournament.

The relievers feature a mix of closers, flamethrowers, and swing-and-miss arms:

  • Carlos Estévez — AL saves leader in 2025
  • Camilo Doval — Yankees flamethrower
  • Seranthony Domínguez — high-leverage power arm
  • Abner Uribe — 100+ mph fastball
  • Huascar Brazobán — dominant strikeout stuff
  • Wandy Peralta — veteran lefty specialist
  • Gregory Soto — power lefty with big strikeout numbers

Through the early rounds of the tournament, this bullpen has stacked scoreless innings while striking hitters out at a ridiculous rate.

Velocity everywhere. Multiple guys sitting 98–100 mph.

The only real concern?

Command.

A few of these arms can get wild. Walks have popped up in key moments.

Against a patient lineup like Team USA, that could become dangerous fast.

This Is the Type of Game the WBC Was Built For

Let’s be honest for a second.

This matchup is exactly why the World Baseball Classic works.

Paul Skenes vs Luis Severino.

A Dominican lineup full of sluggers.

Team USA stacked with MVPs.

Miami crowd split between two passionate fanbases.

You couldn’t script it better.

From my perspective as a Dominican-American baseball fan, it’s the best possible outcome.

Either my country wins.

Or my country wins.

But purely from a baseball standpoint, Team USA might hold the early advantage.

If Skenes dominates the first few innings and Severino makes one mistake, this game could swing quickly.

But if Severino survives those opening frames and the Dominican bullpen takes over?

Then things could get very interesting.

One thing is guaranteed.

Sunday night in Miami is going to be electric.
