Punchless Yankees Fall 3-1, Lose Home Series to Cardinals

The Yankees had chances all night. They just did absolutely nothing with them.

New York dropped another ugly one Wednesday night, losing 3-1 to the St. Louis Cardinals at Yankee Stadium and falling 4 1/2 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East.

This was not some dominant pitching performance where the Yankees never had an opportunity. They walked eight times. They put runners on base. The Cardinals made two errors. St. Louis practically kept opening the door.

The Yankees responded by going 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position, stranding 11 men and finishing with only four hits.

That is how you lose a home series to a Cardinals team sitting below .500.

Another Night of Nothing From the Offense

The Yankees are still without Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Cody Bellinger, but injuries cannot excuse every lifeless at-bat. At some point, the players in the lineup have to produce something.

Heliot Ramos doubled in the second inning. Austin Wells singled in the third. George Lombard Jr. added a hit in the fifth. Paul Goldschmidt doubled as a pinch hitter in the seventh.

That was basically the entire offensive highlight package.

New York’s only run came in the sixth inning without a hit. Ben Rice walked, Luis García Jr. walked, Ramos was hit by a pitch and Jazz Chisholm Jr. drew a bases-loaded walk.

The Yankees had finally forced St. Louis into trouble. One swing could have changed the game.

Spencer Jones struck out looking before the walk to Chisholm. Ryan McMahon then struck out swinging with the bases still loaded, ending the inning with the Yankees trailing 3-1.

McMahon slammed his bat and helmet in frustration. The reaction was understandable, but frustration does not put runs on the scoreboard.

Will Warren Made One Costly Mistake

Will Warren was not perfect, but he gave the Yankees a chance. The right-hander allowed three runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings while striking out five.

All three runs came with two outs in the fifth.

After a single and a fielder’s choice, Joshua Crooks singled to put two runners aboard. Warren struck out César Prieto and was one out away from escaping.

Instead, JJ Wetherholt drove a two-run double over Trent Grisham’s head in center field. Iván Herrera immediately followed with another double, scoring Wetherholt and making it 3-0.

That short sequence decided the game because the Yankees’ lineup once again provided no margin for error.

The Same Offensive Problem Keeps Returning

The Yankees have now scored two runs or fewer in six of their last seven games.

This is no longer one bad night. It is a lineup-wide failure.

Grisham went 0-for-5. Jones went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. García went hitless. McMahon walked twice but stranded four runners. The Yankees struck out 10 times and repeatedly failed whenever the game demanded a big at-bat.

Lombard at least continued showing flashes in his second major-league game. The rookie collected another hit and made multiple impressive defensive plays at shortstop. Unfortunately, he also struck out with two runners aboard to end the eighth inning.

The Yankees are now 64-51 and heading into a three-game series against the first-place Atlanta Braves. Max Fried will face his former team in Friday night’s opener.

They need more than encouraging effort and angry helmet throws.

They need runs.
