Spencer Jones gets his first Yankees moment
Spencer Jones waited for that first big-league home run, and when it finally came, he made sure nobody had to ask if it had enough.
The Yankees’ 6-foot-7 left-handed outfielder unloaded for his first career homer on June 9 against the Guardians, a two-run shot that traveled 443 feet. That is not a cheap one. That is not a Yankee Stadium porch special. That is grown-man power, and for a player the organization has been talking about for years, it was the kind of swing that makes everybody stop for a second.
Jones finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored, a home run, and 2 RBI. On the season, he is now hitting .278 with 10 hits in 36 at-bats, 1 home run, 5 RBI, 3 walks, 16 strikeouts, 1 double, and 1 stolen base.
So yes, the strikeouts are still there. Nobody is pretending that part does not exist. But the tools? The power? The reason the Yankees have remained patient with him? That was on full display.

A calm answer after a loud swing
After the game, Jones was asked if that was the way he imagined his first career home run.
“Yeah, it was awesome,” Jones said. “Felt great.”
That is about as simple as it gets, but the swing said enough.
Jones credited the Yankees’ hitting coaches for helping him go into the at-bat with a plan. He said he knew what he was looking for, saw the pitch well, and put a good swing on it.
That is the part you want to hear. Not just that he ran into one. Not just that he is big and strong enough to hit a baseball into another zip code. The important part is that there was an approach behind it.
For a young hitter with swing-and-miss in his game, that matters. Jones is not going to survive in the big leagues on raw talent alone. The power is real, but the adjustment game has to be real too.
The dugout gave him the rookie treatment
The best part might have been Jones talking about running the bases.
He said he looked into the dugout and nobody was looking at him. Classic. First career home run, and the Yankees gave him the silent treatment before finally exploding when he got back.
Jones called it a special moment, saying it felt real when he got to high-five the third base coach and return to a dugout full of teammates fired up for him.
That is baseball. You grind through the minors, you get called up, you get sent down, you come back, and then one swing gives you a moment nobody can take away.
And lucky for him, the ball landed in the hedges, so he did not have to negotiate with a fan for his own baseball. Jones said he has it in a little Ziploc bag and plans to have one of the guys write it up for him.
Now comes the real test
Jazz Chisholm Jr. joked that the swing looked like something Aaron Judge or Giancarlo Stanton would hit. That is the kind of power Jones has. When he barrels it, it does not look normal.
Jones was also asked about Jazz’s home run trot and whether he could ever see himself doing something similar.
“You never know,” Jones said. “The guy’s got a lot of swag. Who knows if it’ll rub off on me someday.”
For now, Jones does not need to become Jazz. He does not need to become Judge. He does not need to become Stanton.
He needs to become Spencer Jones.
The Yankees are dealing with injuries, the lineup needs help, and opportunities like this do not stay open forever in New York. But if Jones keeps giving them loud contact, competitive at-bats, and moments like this, the conversation changes fast.
The first one is out of the way.
Now we see if the kid starts building something.
