NEW YORK — It’s been tough at times for Dellin Betances to explain his control problems.

Not on Sunday.

“There was just too much blood there,” he said.

There, for Betances, was on his ring finger after cutting it on his thumb nail during the eighth inning of the Yankees‘ 6-2 win over the A’s at Yankee Stadium.

Too much blood, for Betances, was on the ball. He kept bleeding on the baseball.

“It wasn’t pain at all,” he said. “It was just uncomfortable because the ball kind of like sliding back and forth in my hand.”

Play Yankees underrated, overrated

With two outs, Betances threw a 1-0 curveball to Khris Davis. It didn’t go anywhere near where catcher Gary Sanchez was set up.

Trainer Steve Donohue checked on Betances and tried to blot up the blood the best he could.

Betances told him he was fine. He walked Davis. Then he struck out Matt Olson on four pitches to complete the scoreless inning.

“It kept bleeding,” he said. “I was trying my best to get the third out there.”

Had that ever happened before?

“It’s happened but I haven’t had that much blood,” he said. “I had a good amount of blood so it was kind of hard to grip the ball toward the end. It happened after the second out. It just kept bleeding and kept bleeding. Steve had to come out there and try to dry it off and I was fortunate enough to get that last out.”
