Yankees Get Destroyed 12-2 by Mets as Gerrit Cole Implodes in the Bronx

AI Overview

The Mets routed the Yankees 12-2 at Yankee Stadium, ending New York’s four-game winning streak. Gerrit Cole allowed nine hits, five earned runs and three home runs in 4.1 innings, while Francisco Lindor led the Mets with two homers and five RBIs. New York managed seven hits, with Cody Bellinger providing both its RBI single and solo homer. The Yankees fell to 85-63 and will start Cam Schlittler on Sunday.

The Yankees came into Saturday riding a 4-game winning streak.

Then the Mets walked into Yankee Stadium and absolutely buried them.

New York got hammered 12-2 in a Subway Series game that was basically over before the Yankees offense ever had a chance to get comfortable. Gerrit Cole was hit hard, the bullpen eventually turned it into a blowout, and the Yankees had almost no answer offensively outside of Cody Bellinger.

This was ugly from the beginning.

Lindor immediately put Cole in trouble

Francisco Lindor opened the game by taking Cole deep to right field, giving the Mets a 1-0 lead before most people had even settled into their seats.

The second inning made things worse.

Jared Young singled, and with 2 outs, Luis Torrens jumped Cole for a 2-run homer to left. Just like that, it was 3-0.

Then Carson Benge made it 4-0 with a solo shot in the third.

That is 3 home runs allowed by Cole in the first 3 innings of a Subway Series game at Yankee Stadium. Not exactly the type of performance you expect from the guy you are supposed to trust in October.

Bellinger was basically the entire Yankees offense

The Yankees finally showed some life in the fourth.

Paul Goldschmidt doubled to left, Aaron Judge moved him to third with a deep fly ball, and Bellinger brought him home with an RBI single to right.

That cut the deficit to 4-1.

But the Mets answered immediately.

Juan Soto doubled to start the fifth, moved to third and scored when Benge singled to center. That ended Cole’s afternoon after only 4.1 innings.

Cole finished allowing 9 hits, 5 earned runs and 3 home runs while striking out 4. His record dropped to 8-9.

And against the Mets lately? It has been a disaster. Cole is now 0-3 with a 10.92 ERA across his last 3 Subway Series starts.

The game turned into a complete embarrassment

Bellinger hit a solo homer in the sixth to make it 5-2, giving the Yankees at least a small window to make things interesting.

They never did.

Soto homered off Tim Hill in the seventh, and then the Mets destroyed the Yankees bullpen in the eighth.

Torrens doubled home another run before Lindor stepped in with the bases loaded and crushed a grand slam to right.

11-2.

Game over.

Young added another homer in the ninth just to make it 12-2.

The Mets finished with 14 hits and 6 home runs. Lindor went 3-for-5 with 2 homers and 5 RBI. The Yankees managed only 7 hits, while Judge went 0-for-4 and Anthony Volpe went 0-for-3.

Spencer Jones did collect 2 hits, but there was very little else worth talking about.

The Yankees fall to 85-63 and see their 4-game winning streak disappear in embarrassing fashion.

Now Cam Schlittler gets the baseball Sunday.

After what happened Saturday, the Yankees could use an ace-level performance — and maybe an offense that actually shows up with him.
