A Four-Game Sweep That Felt Worse Every Night
The Yankees did not just lose a series in Boston.
They got dragged through Fenway for four straight games, and by the time Jarren Duran’s walk-off single dropped into right field on Sunday night, the damage was already bigger than one bad inning.
Red Sox 6, Yankees 3.
Red Sox 6, Yankees 1.
Red Sox 4, Yankees 1.
Red Sox 5, Yankees 4 in 10 innings.
That is not a rough weekend. That is a full rivalry humiliation package with extra sauce.
Boston entered this thing near the bottom of the AL East. The Yankees arrived with the best record in the American League. And somehow, after four games, the Red Sox were the team dancing, screaming, posting, laughing, and treating this like their own mini World Series.
The Yankees? They left Fenway one game behind Tampa Bay in the AL East.
That is how fast things can turn when your bats disappear, your defense gets shaky, and your bullpen turns a late lead into a Boston celebration.
Sonny Gray Had The Yankees In A Blender
The finale was the one that really made the sweep sting.
Sonny Gray, yes, that Sonny Gray, took a no-hitter into the eighth inning against his former team. You cannot make that up. The Yankees spent seven innings looking like they were swinging underwater.
Gray went 7.1 innings, allowed 1 hit, walked 1, struck out 9, and hit 2,000 career strikeouts while doing it.
The Yankees had nothing.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. struck out twice and got ejected after arguing a check-swing strike three to end the sixth. Jasson Domínguez struck out twice. Cody Bellinger struck out twice. Spencer Jones struck out three times. As a team, the Yankees finished with 3 hits and 12 strikeouts.
Three hits in 10 innings.
That is not an offense. That is a missing person report.
Rodón Was Good Enough, But The Yankees Still Found Trouble
Carlos Rodón was not perfect, but he kept the Yankees in the game.
He went 5 innings, allowed only 1 hit, struck out 6, walked 4, and both runs against him were unearned. The problem came in the fourth inning, when the Yankees started giving Boston extra oxygen.
Wilyer Abreu walked. Willson Contreras reached on an Oswaldo Cabrera error. Roman Gonzalez moved the runners over. Then Caleb Durbin singled to center and scored both runners.
Just like that, Boston had a 2-0 lead without exactly beating the cover off the ball.
That is what makes this kind of loss so annoying. The Red Sox did not need to be some machine. They just waited for the Yankees to blink.

The Ninth Inning Gave Them Life
For a minute, the Yankees actually looked like they were about to steal one.
Aroldis Chapman came in for Boston in the ninth, and the Yankees finally cracked the door open. Jose Caballero singled. Anthony Volpe walked. Ben Rice hit a deep fly to right, and Abreu’s throwing error allowed Caballero to score and Volpe to move to third.
Then Paul Goldschmidt came off the bench and put the ball in play, bringing Volpe home to tie the game at 2-2.
After being no-hit into the eighth, the Yankees had somehow tied it in the ninth.
That should have been the turning point.
Instead, it became the setup for more pain.
The Yankees Took The Lead In The 10th And Still Blew It
In the 10th, the Yankees actually went ahead.
Max Schuemann started at second as the automatic runner. Amed Rosario, who broke up Gray’s no-hit bid earlier, singled to right and scored Schuemann. Another Abreu throwing error moved Rosario to second. Cabrera dropped down a sacrifice bunt, and Austin Wells reached on a fielder’s choice to score Rosario.
Yankees 4, Red Sox 2.
At that point, you have to win the game.
You have to.
Instead, Fernando Cruz came in and the whole thing collapsed in about five minutes.
Anthony Seigler singled in the automatic runner to make it 4-3. Masataka Yoshida doubled to deep right. Tsung-Che Cheng hit a sacrifice fly to tie it. Then the Yankees brought Amed Rosario in from left field to create a five-man infield.
Duran hit the ball where nobody was standing.
Red Sox win, 5-4.
Fenway explodes.
Yankees fans stare at the screen like they just got charged a cover fee to watch pain.
This Was More Than One Bad Loss
This was Boston’s first four-game sweep of the Yankees since 2018. It was also Boston’s first four-game winning streak of the season.
Read that again.
The Red Sox had not won four straight all year until the Yankees showed up.
That is the part that makes this series feel nasty. The Yankees did not get swept by some powerhouse that was rolling through the league. They got swept by a last-place Red Sox team that suddenly remembered how much it hates them.
That is rivalry baseball at its most disgusting.
The Yankees are now 12-12 in June, and Aaron Boone called the series “obviously terrible.” There is no need to dress it up more than that. It was terrible. It was ugly. It was embarrassing. And it knocked them out of first place.
Yankees Fans Went Nuclear
Online, Yankees fans reacted exactly how you would expect.
Embarrassment. Anger. Memes. Panic. The whole Bronx group chat on fire.
Fans called it humiliating, one of the lowest points of the season, and a classic Boone June swoon. Red Sox fans, meanwhile, treated it like a holiday. They should. Their team may be having a down year, but sweeping the Yankees at Fenway will always hit different for them.
That is the part Yankees fans hate admitting.
Boston could be buried in the standings, missing half its roster, playing ugly baseball, and still find a way to turn a Yankees series into a circus.
Now The Yankees Come Home With Heat On Them
The Yankees return home to face the Tigers, and now the whole mood around the team has changed.
A few days ago, they were sitting on top of the American League. Now they are behind Tampa Bay in the division, coming off a four-game Fenway sweep, and trying to explain how they blew a two-run lead in the 10th after being nearly no-hit for most of the night.
Ryan Weathers is scheduled to face Casey Mize on Monday, and the Yankees better bring something that looks like urgency.
Because getting swept in Boston is always bad.
Getting swept in Boston by a last-place Red Sox team, falling out of first place, and doing it with 3 hits in the finale?
That is not just a loss.
That is getting rekt.
Just like that, first place is gone. Tampa Bay now sits at 48-33 with a .593 winning percentage, while the Yankees are 48-35, sitting 1 game back after getting embarrassed in Boston.
The next test does not look soft either: Ryan Weathers opens the Tigers series against Casey Mize, Cam Schlittler draws Tarik Skubal on Tuesday, and Will Warren closes it out Wednesday against Troy Melton, who comes in at 4-1 with a 2.39 ERA.
