The Yankees finally got Max Fried back, watched him look like Max Fried again, and now they are right back where they started.
New York placed Fried on the 15-day injured list with a left elbow bone bruise, the same issue that already cost him more than two months earlier this season. The move was announced August 17 and is retroactive to August 14, one day after his latest start.
And yeah, seeing the words “same elbow” is going to make everybody uncomfortable.
Today, the Yankees placed LHP Max Fried on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to 8/14) with a left elbow bone bruise.

Fried Was Pitching Extremely Well
This isn’t a situation where Fried came back and looked compromised. Quite the opposite.
Since returning from the IL on July 22, Fried made five starts and posted a 1.82 ERA over 24.2 innings with 29 strikeouts. He opened his return with five scoreless innings against Pittsburgh, worked his way through shorter outings against the White Sox and Cubs, then delivered 6.1 scoreless innings against Atlanta.
His final start before returning to the injured list came August 13 against Seattle, when Fried allowed just one run across five innings.
So naturally, the question becomes: when did the elbow start bothering him again?
For the season, Fried is 4-4 with a 2.81 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 79 strikeouts against 27 walks in 86.1 innings. He has allowed only two home runs all year.
When he has been on the mound, he has been exactly what the Yankees expected when they handed him an eight-year, $218 million contract before the 2025 season.

The Recurrence Is the Concern
The encouraging part is that this is still being described as a bone bruise rather than ligament damage. Fried originally landed on the IL in May after leaving a start against Baltimore with posterior elbow soreness. Imaging showed the bruise without structural damage to the UCL.
That was good news then.
The problem now is that the injury has returned after a lengthy rehabilitation process.
Maybe another short period of rest settles everything down. Maybe the Yankees are simply being extremely cautious with one of their most important pitchers before September.
But after Fried already missed more than two months with this exact issue, nobody should automatically assume 15 days means 15 days.
Rodón Returns as Fried Goes Down
There is at least some rotation help arriving immediately.
The Yankees activated Carlos Rodón from the injured list, and he is scheduled to start August 18 in Baltimore after missing time with left elbow inflammation.
Gerrit Cole remains at the top of the rotation, while Cam Schlittler, Will Warren and Ryan Weathers give the Yankees additional options. But replacing Fried isn’t simply about finding somebody capable of taking the baseball every fifth day.
You’re trying to replace a pitcher carrying a 2.81 ERA who had looked even better since returning.
That isn’t happening.
September Is What Really Matters Now
The Yankees don’t need Fried winning games in August if pushing him now creates a bigger problem later.
They need him healthy in September and, if this team gets where it wants to go, healthy in October.
Still, this rotation has spent enough of 2026 playing musical chairs with the injured list. Fried returned. Rodón went down. Rodón returns. Fried goes down.
At some point, the Yankees need their actual rotation together.
For now, the diagnosis sounds manageable. But with Fried’s elbow acting up for the second time this season, his recovery becomes one of the biggest stories surrounding this team over the next few weeks.
