Yankees Let This One Slip Early, Then The Reds Made It Embarrassing

Goldschmidt gave the Yankees a quick jolt, but the Reds punched back hard and turned this one into a 10-2 mess in the Bronx.

For about 15 minutes, this looked like one of those Will Warren games where everybody starts getting a little too comfortable. He opened the night by striking out the side in the first inning, making the Reds look completely lost. Blake Dunn froze. JJ Bleday froze. Sal Stewart swung through it. Clean, sharp, aggressive.

Then Paul Goldschmidt gave the Yankees the lead in the bottom half with a solo shot to right-center off Andrew Abbott, and there it was. A 1-0 lead, Warren dealing, Yankees looking like they might actually build something early.

They did not.

The Game Turned In The Third

Cincinnati finally got to Warren in the third after Edwin Arroyo doubled and Dunn walked. Stewart came through with a two-run double to deep left, and just like that, the Yankees were chasing the game instead of controlling it.

The bigger problem was that the Yankees offense basically disappeared after Goldschmidt’s homer. They had traffic, but no finish. Anthony Volpe walked and stole second in the third. Nothing. Volpe and Ali Sanchez singled in the fifth, Amed Rosario walked to load the bases, and Goldschmidt struck out looking. That was probably the at-bat that told you where the day was headed.

The Fifth Inning Broke It Open

The Reds buried the Yankees in the fifth. A Ben Rice error started the inning, Bleday doubled, Stewart added a sacrifice fly, and then Spencer Steer crushed a three-run homer to left. That made it 6-1, and the Stadium energy was gone.

Warren had strikeout stuff, finishing with 8 strikeouts, but the Reds made him pay for the mistakes and the Yankees did not give him any real cushion. That is the whole story. You can strike guys out all night, but when the other side lands the big swing and your lineup keeps leaving chances on the table, it gets ugly fast.

The Eighth Was Just More Damage

The Reds added four more in the eighth off Ryan Yarbrough, with Stewart doing more damage on a bases-clearing double and Dane Myers following with another double. At that point, it was 10-1 and this thing was no longer a baseball game. It was just innings left to complete.

The Yankees scratched one across in the eighth when Cody Bellinger singled, Jasson Domínguez followed with another hit, and Jose Caballero reached on a fielder’s choice that brought Bellinger home. That made it 10-2. Nobody was fooled.

Yankees Offense Wasted Too Many Chances

Goldschmidt homered and Bellinger picked up two hits, but the Yankees went quiet in every big spot. Rice struck out twice. Jazz Chisholm Jr. had a rough night. The bottom half had chances and could not cash in.

That is the part that stings. The Reds did not just win. They showed the difference between putting pressure on a pitcher and actually finishing an inning. Cincinnati finished. The Yankees watched too many chances die.

Final: Reds 10, Yankees 2. A hot start from Warren, one swing from Goldschmidt, and then a whole lot of nothing after that.
