The Yankees did not overwhelm the Phillies on Saturday. They simply pitched, delivered a few timely hits and refused to hand the game away. That was enough for a 3-1 victory in Philadelphia.
Yankees Keep Rolling With Third Straight Win
The Yankees are starting to stack wins again.
Austin Wells and Jasson Domínguez each homered, Cody Bellinger delivered the go-ahead hit and Ryan Weathers gave New York the bounce-back start it desperately needed as the Yankees defeated the Phillies, 3-1, at Citizens Bank Park.
It was New York’s third consecutive victory and fifth win in its last six games. The Yankees improved to 59-45 while extending their road winning streak to six games.
No, this was not an offensive explosion.
The Yankees finished with seven hits, struck out 11 times and left nine runners on base. There were still too many empty at-bats throughout the lineup.
But when they needed somebody to make a play, somebody finally did.

Ryan Weathers Answers the Call
Ryan Weathers entered the game coming off three rough outings. Another bad start would have put the Yankees in an uncomfortable position against a dangerous Philadelphia lineup.
Instead, Weathers settled down after a shaky first inning and gave the Yankees 5 2/3 strong innings.
Philadelphia immediately put pressure on him when Trea Turner was hit by a pitch and Kyle Schwarber doubled. Bryce Harper followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Phillies a 1-0 lead.
That could have been the beginning of another long night.
It was not.
Weathers allowed just one run on six hits, walked one and struck out seven while throwing 97 pitches. After the Harper sacrifice fly, Philadelphia failed to score again.
The Phillies had opportunities. They collected seven hits and repeatedly put runners on base, but Weathers kept making pitches when the game started getting uncomfortable.
That is what the Yankees needed from him.
Not seven perfect innings. Not some dramatic masterpiece. Just a starter who could keep the game close and give the offense time to figure something out.

Austin Wells Finally Delivers
Austin Wells has been one of the biggest disappointments in the Yankees lineup this season.
His numbers are still ugly. One swing does not erase months of struggles.
But the Yankees need something from the catcher position, and Wells gave them a major swing in the third inning.
With two outs and nobody on, Wells drove a Brian Keller pitch to left-center field for a solo home run, tying the game at 1-1.
It was his seventh homer of the season and just his 14th RBI.
Those numbers tell you how bad the season has been for Wells offensively. Still, the Yankees are not in a position to reject production from anybody. Wells also drew a leadoff walk in the sixth and eventually scored the go-ahead run.
For one night, he was directly involved in two of the Yankees’ three runs.
That is a start.

Cody Bellinger Comes Through Again
The Yankees took the lead in the sixth without needing a home run.
Wells opened the inning with a walk. After Ryan McMahon and Ben Rice struck out, Paul Goldschmidt kept the inning alive with a two-out single.
That brought up Cody Bellinger.
Bellinger lined an RBI single into center field, scoring Wells and giving New York a 2-1 advantage.
That was the biggest at-bat of the game.
Bellinger finished 2-for-4 with a single, double and his 53rd RBI of the season. While several Yankees hitters continued to swing through pitches, Bellinger put the ball in play and delivered when the team needed him.
Sometimes baseball is not complicated.
Two outs. Runner in scoring position. Find a way to get him home.

Jasson Domínguez Adds Some Insurance
One run was enough for the Yankees pitching staff, but Jasson Domínguez gave the bullpen a little extra breathing room in the seventh.
Domínguez fell behind José Alvarado 0-2 before working the count even. He then drove the next pitch over the left-field wall for his sixth home run of the season.
That gave the Yankees a 3-1 lead.
The homer was another encouraging moment for Domínguez, who has not completely taken off offensively but continues to show flashes of the player the Yankees believe he can become.
He finished the game 1-for-4, but his only hit was a big one.
The Yankees need Domínguez to become more than a player who occasionally flashes power. They need consistency. They need better at-bats. They need him to establish himself as a legitimate everyday threat.
Saturday was another step in that direction.
The Bullpen Shut the Door
Once Weathers left the game, the Yankees bullpen gave Philadelphia nothing.
Angel Chivilli finished the sixth inning. Paul Blackburn followed with two hitless innings, allowing only one walk while recording his second hold.
Then David Bednar handled the ninth.
There was no drama. No leadoff walk. No unnecessary 30-pitch adventure.
Bednar retired J.T. Realmuto, Bryson Stott and Brandon Marsh in order to record his 20th save.
The Yankees bullpen covered 3 1/3 scoreless innings without allowing a hit.
That is how you protect a close lead on the road.
A Good Win, But the Offense Still Has Work to Do
The Yankees deserve credit for finding a way to win this game.
They received a quality effort from Weathers, two home runs from young hitters, a clutch hit from Bellinger and dominant work from the bullpen.
They also struck out 11 times.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts. Trent Grisham went hitless and left four runners on base. Ben Rice struck out twice. Ryan McMahon was also held without a hit.
Against a Phillies pitching setup that included an opener and a 32-year-old career minor leaguer making his MLB debut, the Yankees should have produced more than three runs.
They did enough to win, and right now that is the most important part.
But there is still a difference between winning a close game and playing a complete one.
The Yankees will go for the series sweep Sunday night when Will Warren faces Phillies left-hander Cristopher Sánchez.
Three straight wins are good.
Finishing the job would be even better.
