Yankees Waste Cam Schlittler Gem In Brutal 4-3 Loss To Brewers

The Yankees had this one. Then they gave it away.

This is the type of loss that sticks with you.

The Yankees had Cam Schlittler dealing. Six scoreless innings. Only two hits allowed. Six strikeouts. And this kid even took a 108.5 mph liner off the leg in the first inning and still stayed in the game like nothing happened.

That should have been the story.

Instead, the Yankees lost 4-3 in 10 innings to the Brewers, wasting one of the better starts you’re going to see. You cannot make this stuff up.

Paul Goldschmidt opened the game with a leadoff homer, giving the Yankees a quick 1-0 lead. Later, Goldschmidt came through again in the fourth with an infield single that scored Amed Rosario, making it 2-0.

And with Schlittler cruising, it felt like the Yankees were in control.

But the problem? The offense went cold. Again.

The Yankees struck out 15 times and left 26 runners on base as a team. Ben Rice, Spencer Jones, Austin Wells, and others had chances, and the big hit just never came. Aaron Judge walked three times, but the lineup around him did not do enough damage.

Milwaukee finally got on the board in the seventh when Jake Bauers hit a solo homer off Brent Headrick. Then in the eighth, Camilo Doval gave up a two-out single to Brice Turang, Turang stole second, and William Contreras tied it with a single to left.

That was the first punch.

The second came in extras.

Ryan McMahon gave the Yankees a 3-2 lead in the top of the 10th with a clutch two-out RBI single. Great moment. Exactly what they needed.

Then the bottom half happened.

Fernando Cruz allowed the tying run, Tim Hill came in, made a bad throw trying to cut down the lead runner at third, and Contreras ended it with a sacrifice fly to right.

Ballgame.

Brewers win 4-3.

This one is frustrating because the Yankees had the pitching. They had the lead. They even had the extra-inning lead. But they did not finish.

Schlittler deserved better. Goldschmidt showed up. McMahon gave them a chance.

But the bullpen cracked, the offense wasted too many spots, and the Yankees dropped back-to-back games for the first time since early April.

Now Carlos Rodón makes his season debut Sunday, and the Yankees need a response.
