Yankees Waste Ryan Weathers Gem As Benintendi Burns Them In The Eighth
The Yankees had this one sitting right there.
Not pretty. Not loud. Not one of those games where the offense is rolling and everybody is having fun in the Bronx. But it was right there anyway. Ryan Weathers gave them more than enough, the game was tied late, and the Yankees only needed one clean inning from the bullpen to keep it moving.
Instead, Andrew Benintendi came off the bench and punched the whole night in the mouth.
The White Sox beat the Yankees 5-1 on Thursday night at Yankee Stadium, snapping New York’s four-game winning streak and ending Chicago’s nine-game losing streak in the Bronx. And yes, it came from Benintendi, because of course it did.
Weathers Did His Job
Ryan Weathers was excellent. The lefty gave the Yankees 6.1 innings, allowed just one run on three hits, walked one, and struck out eight. That should win you a lot of ballgames, especially at home.
The only real damage against him came in the second inning when Colson Montgomery homered to right-center to give Chicago a 1-0 lead. After that, Weathers settled in and kept the Yankees in the game.
Ryan McMahon answered in the third with a solo shot to left-center, tying it at 1-1. That was basically the Yankees’ offense for the night. Six hits. One run. Ten strikeouts. One walk. That is not going to cut it, no matter how good the pitching is.
The game turned in the eighth. Sam Antonacci doubled off Fernando Cruz. Tim Hill came in and hit Jacob Gonzalez. Then he hit Tristan Peters too. Bases loaded. Trouble everywhere.
Camilo Doval entered to face Benintendi, and Benintendi jumped on the first pitch. A 100 mph sinker. Right-center seats. Grand slam. Ballgame.
That is the kind of inning that makes fans stare at the TV like, “Really? That fast?”
The Yankees had chances before that. Spencer Jones doubled. Jose Caballero singled. Anthony Volpe doubled in the seventh but got thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple. That play hurt even more once the game got away an inning later.
Another Injury Scare Too
Jazz Chisholm Jr. also left after fouling a pitch off the area near his groin, which is the last thing this team needs with Aaron Judge already out with a fractured rib.
The Yankees are now 45-28, still in a strong spot, but this was an ugly reminder. When the offense sleeps, the bullpen has no room to blink.
