Some prospects put together nice spring numbers.

George Lombard Jr. is doing something more interesting.

He’s doing damage against legitimate major-league pitchers.

The Yankees’ top prospect has quietly put together one of the most intriguing springs in camp, and it isn’t just because of the stat line. It’s because of who he’s producing against.

So far this Grapefruit League season, Lombard has taken Boston left-hander Garrett Crochet deep and ripped a triple against Freddy Peralta — two pitchers who aren’t minor-league fillers. They’re established big-league arms.

And Lombard hasn’t looked overwhelmed in the slightest.

The Crochet Moment

One of Lombard’s loudest swings came on March 4 at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers.

Leading off the game against Garrett Crochet, Lombard got a 96.8 mph fastball and didn’t miss it. The Yankees’ young shortstop prospect launched the pitch 392 feet over the replica Green Monster.

The ball left his bat at 104.2 mph.

For a 20-year-old prospect facing a power left-hander who routinely touches the upper 90s, that kind of swing grabs attention quickly.

Lombard wasn’t done either. Later in the game he added a single that came off the bat at 108.5 mph, showing the kind of bat speed scouts have been raving about since he entered the Yankees system.

The Yankees won the game 4–0, but the bigger takeaway was Lombard looking completely comfortable against a pitcher with elite velocity.

Then Came Freddy Peralta

Four days later, Lombard did it again — this time against Freddy Peralta.

During a Yankees–Mets matchup on March 8 at Clover Park in Port St. Lucie, Lombard drove a ball to left that turned into a triple after it caromed off the glove of outfielder A.J. Ewing near the wall.

The hit sparked a Yankees rally, and Lombard eventually came around to score during a two-run inning against Peralta.

By that point, Lombard’s spring OPS had climbed to 1.069.

Different pitcher. Different type of swing. Same takeaway.

The kid can hit.

This Is Why the Yankees Are Taking Their Time

We recently wrote on NYYNEWS that the Yankees already believe Lombard could handle shortstop defensively in the major leagues.

That part of his game isn’t the question.

The final piece of Lombard’s development has always been the bat — consistency, approach, and proving he can produce against higher-level pitching.

Spring training won’t answer that fully.

But moments like this show why the organization is so confident in his long-term future.

The Timeline Hasn’t Changed — But The Noise Is Growing

The Yankees still see 2026 as a development year for Lombard. More reps, more adjustments, and more experience against advanced pitching.

No one inside the organization is rushing that process.

But when a 20-year-old prospect starts squaring up fastballs from pitchers like Crochet and putting pressure on arms like Peralta, people notice.

That doesn’t mean Lombard is coming to the Bronx tomorrow.

It does mean the future might be getting closer.

The Quiet Truth Yankees Fans Are Starting To See

George Lombard Jr. isn’t in the Yankees’ 2026 plans.

Not yet.

But if this spring is telling us anything, it’s that Lombard isn’t just another prospect moving through the system.

He’s a player the Yankees believe could anchor the next era of their infield.

And right now, he’s getting a head start by proving he can already square up the kind of pitching he’ll eventually face in the Bronx.
