The Yankees’ attempt to land Corey Seager this offseason was another swing and miss.
Let’s talk about what might have been. According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Yankees engaged in trade talks with the Texas Rangers about acquiring Corey Seager. But here we are, with Seager still in Texas and the Yankees wondering what could’ve been. This wasn’t just a small rumor. It was real, and it had the potential to shake up the Bronx in a big way.
Seager’s Value
Make no mistake, Seager is one of the best shortstops in the game. Whether you look at his .289 career batting average or his 221 home runs over 11 seasons, he’s a player who changes lineups. His 43.0 WAR speaks volumes about his on-field impact. If healthy, projections say he could put up numbers like a .268–.276 average and 25–26 homers in 2026. That’s the kind of consistent production the Yankees could use.
And let’s not forget his contract. With five years down on a 10-year, $325 million deal, it might sound like a lot, but given his production, that’s a bargain. The Yankees’ willingness to explore this trade shows they recognize Seager’s elite level. But alas, he’s not coming to the Bronx.

Why No Deal?
So why didn’t it happen? The Rangers clearly had reasons to even consider trading Seager. Reports indicate they wanted to clear some payroll and fix internal chemistry. But ultimately, they shipped off Marcus Semien instead, who had a reportedly toxic relationship with Seager. The Rangers landed Brandon Nimmo and cash in that deal, a move that signals they’re retooling, not tearing down.
For the Yankees, they might have had to part with top prospects like Jasson Dominguez or Anthony Volpe, and that’s a hefty price. And let’s be honest, would Seager have even chosen the Yankees? Some say it’s unlikely given his current situation in Texas.
What This Means for the Yankees
Here’s the part that matters. The Yankees need to focus on what they have and how they can improve. Missing out on Seager means they’ve got to trust their young talent and see who steps up. It’s clear they’re not afraid to explore big moves, but nothing materialized this time. Maybe that’s a blessing. Maybe it’s a missed opportunity. Only time will tell.
This isn’t just about Seager. It’s about the Yankees’ strategy moving forward. They need to decide if they’re building around their youth or if they’re still looking for that blockbuster trade.
Looking Ahead
The Yankees’ offseason moves—or lack thereof—sent a strong signal. They’re in a holding pattern, assessing their options and kept an eye on the market.
Yankee fans, what do you think? Are you relieved we didn’t part with top prospects, or are you frustrated we didn’t secure a talent like Seager?
