Yankees prevail 2-1 in Toronto on Sunday to take the weekend series.
TORONTO — One thing the Yankees definitely didn’t want any part of Sunday at Rogers Centre was extra innings.
Not with a doubleheader scheduled for Monday in Baltimore.
Oh well.
Yankees think Gray is best option? Here are 7 in-system arms worth trying
All’s well that ends well.
The Yankees pulled out a 2-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays in 10 innings, and thanks to starter Domingo German getting through six innings for the sixth time in 11 starts manager Aaron Boone’s bullpen isn’t in a terrible shape.
“As much as you manage for the day, you have the big picture, especially going into (Monday),” manager Aaron Boone said. “So we were trying to stay away from a few guys in the bullpen.
“Domingo picked us up big-time going six strong and to be able to scratch a run there in the 10th, it’s about as good as we could have drawn it up.
Brett Gardner drove in the go-ahead run for the Yankees with a one-out single to left off Blue Jays reliever Tyler Clippard.
Entering in the 10th, Clippard leadoff hitter Greg Bird on a 2-2 pitch, then after Tyler Wade was inserted as a pinch-hitter, Austin Romine sacrifice the lead run into scoring position with a good bunt up the first-base line.
Gardner then laced a 1-1 changeup to left to score Wade.
From there, David Robertson closed out the Jays by pitching a scoreless 10th on a day the Yankees rested closer Aroldis Chapman, who left Saturday’s game after one batter due to a sore left knee.
By taking two of three over the weekend, the Yankees made it four consecutive series wins this season over the Jays, three of them coming in Toronto.
The Yanks have won nine of 13 games facing the Jays – they’re 7-2 at Rogers Centre – with six home games remaining, three in August and three in September.
Until the 10th, the only runs came on a first-inning groundout by Yankees third baseman Miguel Andujar and a sixth-inning homer by Blue Jays designated hitter Kendrys Morales.
Both starting pitchers had good outings, German for the Yankees and rookie left-hander Ryan Borucki for the Blue Jays.
German had to pitch out of a couple of jams, but limited the Jays to one run on four hits over six innings with five strikeouts and two walks.
Making his third big-league start since a call-up from Triple-A, Borucki held the Yankees to one run and seven hits over seven innings with five strikeouts and two walks.
The Yankees took a 1-0 lead in the first when Aaron Judge singled to center with one out, Giancarlo Stanton followed with a double to right and Andujar hit a run-producing groundball to second base with the Blue Jays’ infield playing back.
German escaped trouble in the first when he struck out Morales after Justin Smoak hit a two-out double and again in the fourth when a leadoff single and a pair of two-out walks loaded the bases for Lourdes Gurriel Jr., who struck out to end the inning.
The Yanks’ 1-0 lead stuck until Morales led off the Blue Jays with a homer to right on a 95-mph, 3-2 fastball that was over the plate just below the belt.
The Jays threatened to pull ahead in the seventh when Gurriel greeted reliever Adam Warren with a leadoff double to center, but the next three hitters were retired, two of them fanning.
“It all starts with our pitching,” Gardner said. “I thought German was great and once we turned it over to the bullpen, Warren and (Chad) Green and (Robinson), those guys just kept putting up zeroes and we were able to come through there in the 10th. Felt good.”
NOTABLE
–Center fielder Aaron Hicks felt fine the day after leaving Saturday’s game with a left leg cramp, but he was rested as a precaution.
Clint Frazier started in left field (with Gardner moving from left to center for Hicks) and was 0 for 3 with two strikeouts and a walk.
–With the Blue Jays starting a left-hander for the second day in a row, Brandon Drury made his second consecutive start at second base.
