Third baseman Brandon Drury was activated from the disabled list and optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday, May 14, 2018 (5/14/18). Drury is dealing with blurry vision and severe migraines and will remain in the minors while Miguel Andujar handles third base for the Yankees.
Yankees third baseman Brandon Drury finally is off the disabled list and …
He’s remaining in Triple-A.
After being on the DL for five weeks due to blurry vision and severe migraines, Drury was activated and optioned to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday, an off day for the Yankees.
Surprised?
You shouldn’t be even though Drury hit .315 with two homers and seven RBIs in 17 rehab games, including .343 in 11 Triple-A games.
After all, it was a week ago that Drury admitted that his years-long issues with blurry vision were ongoing even though his situation had improved during his time away from the Yankees.
Scouting reports on Yankees prospects from Trenton manager
By remaining in the minors, the Yankees can continue moving Drury from Triple-A to Double-A so that he can travel to New York for his three-to-four weekly doctor appointments.
Also, there’s no need to rush Drury back because his starting job perhaps was lost during his DL stint to rookie Miguel Andujar, who has been a steady contributor at the plate and in the field.
In 33 games, Andujar is batting .282 with 12 doubles, three homers and 14 RBIs. Defensively, he has just two errors in 60 chances in 30 games at third, 28 as a starter.
The Yankees, who begin a two-game road interleague series against the Washington Nationals on Tuesday night, acquired Drury from the Arizona Diamondbacks early into spring training to be their starting third baseman.
Drury was hitting .217 with a homer and four RBIs for the Yankees in eight games when he was forced out of a game on April 6. The next day he was put on the DL.
Besides Drury being optioned on Monday, the Yankees transferred the assignments of first baseman Greg Bird and outfielder Billy McKinney from high A Tampa to Double-A Trenton.
Bird is expected to be off the DL before June 1 after undergoing ankle surgery in late March.
McKinney likely will be optioned to Triple-A when he returns from a shoulder injury that occurred on March 31 when he slammed into the wall playing left field for the Yankees in his second big-league game.
