Luis Severino held the Red Sox to one run over seven innings Wednesday night in a 10-1 Yankees win at Yankee Stadium.

NEW YORK — All-Star righty Luis Severino understands that now isn’t the time to be focusing alone October baseball let alone looking beyond the AL Wild Card Game to a Yankees–Red Sox Division Series.
The Yankees still are probably at least couple days away from clinching a playoff berth after blowing out the Red Sox 10-1 on Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium, then they’ll try to lock down home field for the Wild Card Game, and after that they’ll need to deal with that do-or-die game on Oct. 3 that probably will be against the Oakland Athletics.
But if and when the Yankees get past Oakland and advance to a best-of-five series against the Red Sox, Severino says the Red Sox’s AL East crown and best-in-baseball regular-season record will mean nothing.
“They know we’re good,” Severino said after a seven-inning, one-run outing that resulted in his 18th win and the Red Sox missing a chance to clinch the AL East at Yankee Stadium for the second night in a row. “Every time we play Boston, they know it’s going to be a fight.”
Did Yankees just drop big hint who will start Wild Card Game?
In Severino’s mind, the 93-58 Yankees are every bit as great as the 103-49 Red Sox.
“Of course we are,” he said.
While the AL East standings suggest otherwise – Boston still is 9 1/2 games up on the second-place Yankees after losing two in a row this week – Severino thinks luck has played a factor.
“We had a lot of injuries,” Severino said. “A lot of our top guys went down. Aaron Judge got hurt. On their side, J.D. Martinez and Mookie Betts have had huge seasons, but most everybody was healthy.”
For just a brief moment late Wednesday night, Severino dared to gaze ahead to what could be.
“If we play Boston in the playoffs, that would be fun!” Severino said. “Oh, yeah!”
