The Yankees are just one home run shy of owning a new single-season team home run record. Aaron Judge, Aaron Hick and Aaron Boone talked about it.
BOSTON — The Yankees need one more home run.
Aaron Judge wants them to get it.
“Now that we’ve tied the record,” Judge said, “let’s go out there and break it.”
Judge was talking about how the Yankees crushed four home runs to tie MLB’s single-season team home-run record in a 11-6 win over the Red Sox at Fenway Park on Friday night.
They’re at 264 bombs with two meaningless games to play — the Yankees clinched host duties for the American League Wild Card Game against the A’s with the victory.
Why not just pay Sabathia $500K?
They’re tied with the 1997 Mariners for the most in a campaign.
“We’ve got a lot of guys on this team with a lot of thump,” Judge said. “They’ve been doing it all year, especially once we added (Luke) Voit, what he’s been doing for us has been huge.”
Voit, a first baseman, clubbed his 13th home run since the Yankees traded for him in a deal with the Cardinals just before the All-Star break.
Gary Sanchez and Aaron Hicks also went deep.
A dozen Yankees have at least double-digit home runs.
“We’re not done yet. We’ve still got two games left to be able to break it. So I say why not?” Hicks said.
Hick said it would be a point of pride to be on the team that holds the new record.
“I mean, definitely,” he said. “That means the team comes in day in and day out and ready to play games. Obviously, we’re hitting home runs. So it feels awesome.”
Said manager Aaron Boone, “If you were going to tell us we were going to break that record at the beginning of the year, you would have probably thought Giancarlo (Stanton) is hitting 50 or 60, Judgie is hitting 50 or 60, Gary’s hitting … and because of injuries and different things, that hasn’t been the case.
“We’ve gotten a lot of production from a lot of different people who have had a big hand in that. But more importantly, us finishing off what’s been overall a really strong regular season.”
