Yankees-Red Sox: What happened to fan who nailed Giancarlo Stanton at Fenway Park?

Giancarlo Stanton hit his 38th home run of the season on Saturday, September 29, 2018 (9/29/19) at Fenway Park in Boston, Mass. in the seventh inning of the Yankees’ 8-5 win over the Boston Red Sox. His home run landed atop the Green Monster, but was quickly returned to the field below.

The Yankees–Red Sox rivalry has seen more than its share of heated moments and confrontations through the years.

Thurman Munson vs. Carlton Fisk.

Don Zimmer vs. Pedro Martinez.

Alex Rodriguez vs. Jason Varitek.

Giancarlo Stanton vs. fan atop the Green Monster will not be joining this list.

Stanton, you may remember, hit a home run in the seventh inning of the Yankees’ 8-5 win on Saturday at Fenway Park in Boston, Mass.

A fan in the Monster seats retrieved the ball and sent it back to the field.

His throw nailed Stanton as he was rounding second base.

Stanton didn’t seem fazed by it when talking to the media after the game.

But what about the fan, Andrew Lastrapes? Surely he was ejected for his boorish behavior?

Think again, per ESPN:

“When the ball hit him, I was just like, ‘Oh, this might be a big deal,'” Lastrapes said.

Immediately, Lastrapes called out to a friend who was standing nearby. He told Thomas Barton they’d better leave. Barton, a 32-year-old Athens, Georgia, man, was a row or two below Lastrapes when the ball was thrown. In video replays of the throw, Barton, wearing a brown shirt, can be seen lifting his arms in celebration.

“I looked at Thomas and was like, ‘Let’s go,'” Lastrapes said. “So I left, and then I saw a bunch of security go down and [they] just missed me. And then I was one security guard left, and it was an old guy, and he was like, ‘Son, did you hit Giancarlo Stanton with that ball?’

“And I was like, ‘Yes.'”

Lastrapes was apologetic about hitting Stanton. Multiple times, he made it clear he wanted the ballplayer to know he didn’t mean to hit him.

Fenway Park security had Lastrapes fill out some paperwork to document the incident. But according to him, security never formally kicked him out. He also was not told he was banned from the ballpark.

The Yankees could be back in Boston on Friday, if they beat the Oakland A’s in the American League Wild Card Game on Wednesday at Yankee Stadium.

The winner of that game will visit the Red Sox for the American League Division Series.
