The Yankees selected outfielder Ryder Green, 18, with their third-round pick in the 2018 MLB Draft on Tuesday, June 5, 2018 (6/5/18). On Monday, they picked catcher Anthony Seigler, 18, in the first round. They also nabbed catcher Josh Breaux in the second round.
The Yankees selected Ryder Green — an 18-year-old outfielder — with their third-round pick in the 2018 MLB Draft on Tuesday.
It was the 97th overall selection and it came with a $576,400 slot value.
Green, from Karns, Tenn., was MLB.com’s 82nd overall draft prospect and is committed to Vanderbilt.
Here’s a piece of MLB.com’s scouting report on Green:
A batting-practice standout on the showcase circuit, Green has physical strength and plenty of bat speed from the right side of the plate. He has had some swing-and-miss issues in the past but is making more consistent contact this spring. That bodes well for his ability to fully tap into his power potential, which ranks among the best in the 2018 high school crop.
Green is more than just a hitter, however. He’s an average runner out of the batter’s box and quicker once he gets going. He’ll have to move from center to right field at the next level and has the arm for it, as he has been clocked up to 93 mph and flashed a hard curveball on the mound.
Here’s video of Green:
In the first round, they took 18-year-old catcher Anthony Seigler out of Cartersville, Ga. In the second round, they nabbed 20-year-old catcher Josh Breaux out of McLennan Community College.
Everything you must know about Seigler
The Yankees start a three-game series with the Blue Jays in Toronto on Tuesday night.
On Monday, they split a doubleheader with the Tigers in Detroit.
Late Monday night, top Yankees scout Damon Oppenheimer explained his affinity for Seigler.
“The thing that attracts you to Seigler is that he has the tools to catch, and he’s a switch-hitter, which makes him a unique commodity. He’s showing power from both sides of the plate, has really great instincts for baseball, a plus-arm and runs well for a catcher. On top of that, he’s proven to be versatile, with his ability to play other positions,” Oppenheimer said. “Seigler’s got top-of-the-line makeup. We’re very happy about him.”
Oppenheimer also broke down why he was so excited for Breaux.
“Josh Breaux is another guy with a really good makeup,” Oppenheimer said. “He’s still young as a junior college guy, but his arm is huge and he has raw power. His ability to hit has really matured this year. With Breaux, we think we have an impact tools guy who’s a catcher. You’re talking about a big, strong player who shows up and people understand right away why you took him.”
