The Yankees wrap up their nine-game road trip this weekend when they head to Citi Field in Queens for the return of the Subway Series against the Mets.
Manager Aaron Boone’s squad heads into the series having won seven of their last eight games overall. Their 40-18 record is second-best in baseball, behind only the Boston Red Sox, who are setting the pace in the AL East.
The Mets, meanwhile, have lost their last six games to sink into fourth place in the NL East.
To say these two clubs are going in opposite directions is a huge understatement.
Yankees general manage Brian Cashman will be looking to add pieces before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline to a roster that seems destined for the postseason.
Mets GM Sandy Alderson needs to decide if the team is going into a full-blown rebuild, and if so, does that mean trading aces Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard.

Should Alderson put his aces on the block, one has to wonder if the Yankees would be interested, especially now that Jordan Montgomery is out for the year because of Tommy John surgery.
The Yankees will be able to scout both deGrom and Syndergaard this weekend, based on the projected pitching matchups against the Mets:

Saturday: Yankees at Mets, 7:15 p.m., FOX. RHP Domingo German (0-4, 5.44) vs LHP Steven Matz (2-4, 3.42).
Sunday: Yankees at Mets, 8:05 p.m., ESPN. RHP Luis Severino (9-1, 2.20) vs. RHP Noah Syndergaard (4-1, 3.06).
