Yankees spend huge money to keep Michael Kay as face of YES Network

Michael Kay’s days as Yankees play-by-play man on the YES Network won’t be ending anytime soon.

If you are a Michael Kay fan, today is a good day. If you are tired of the long-time play-by-play voice and face of the Yankees on the YES Network, well, get set for many more years of his calls.

According to Andrew Marchand of the New York Post, Kay and the Yankees have agreed to a deal to keep the broadcaster in tow on a long-term contract. The details are astonishing.

Michael Kay will be the Yankees play-by-player for the next three years and maybe longer, sources have told The Post.

Kay and YES Network are putting the finishing touches on a three-year contract with a network option for two more. The deal calls for a salary of more than a million dollars per season.

Kay is believed to be the highest-paid local baseball announcer in the game. He took that mantle when fellow Fordham alum Vin Scully retired from the Dodgers after the 2016 season.

Yes, Kay is the highest-paid local announcer in the sport–and has been for a few years. But throw in a salary of over one million per season and this becomes a reality: Kay will make more from the Yankees this season than Luis Severino, Gary Sanchez or Aaron Judge.

Yanks, Astros bidding war?

So, will this be Kay’s last contract with the team? Don’t count on it.

“I don’t see any end in sight,” Kay told The Post. “I want to keep doing this as long as I want to and as long as they want me to.”

Kay will continue to host his afternoon drive show on 98.7 ESPN. In the latest ratings, Kay and his crew were beat by the return of Mike Francesa on WFAN.
