Clint Frazier: I want to force Yankees to keep me

Outfielder Clint Frazier, recalled from the minors before the washed-out two game series against the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., wants “at least one at-bat to try to push for a spot” on the Yankees’ big-league club.

WASHINGTON — Clint Frazier might not get much of a chance. Still, he wants to prove to the Yankees that he doesn’t belong in Triple-A.

“I didn’t want to go back down without getting at least one at-bat to try to push for a spot,” Frazier said after the Yankees and Nationals were rained out for a second straight day at Nationals Park on Wednesday.

After the postponement, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Frazier — a highly regarded 23-year-old outfielder — will stay with the team at least through the weekend series in Kansas City.

How Yankees made changes after rainouts

It had promoted him Tuesday with the Yankees wanting an extra right-handed bat against lefty Gio Gonzalez and the extra bench body with the designated hitter not in effect while in a National League park.

The Royals are slated to pitch lefties Danny Duffy (Saturday) and Eric Skoglund (Sunday).

“We have a couple lefties in Kansas City,” Boone said. “I would certainly imagine we’ve got Duffy that second day in there. That will almost certainly be in there then and it’ll be something we monitor day by day, but we won’t have him in here just regularly sitting.”

Frazier was relieved to hear he’d stay.

“Obviously that’s a big weight off my shoulders knowing that I don’t have to sneak on that team flight right now,” Frazier said. “I’m happy. I just want to get an opportunity. … I’m just going to make sure I’m prepared for that game and do the best that I can.

Frazier hit .362 with three homers and four RBI at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre with a 1.125 OPS in 12 games. He missed almost all of spring training and April dealing with concussion symptoms following a crash into a wall trying to make a catch during camp. The Yankees acquired him in 2016 as the jewel of a package the received from the Indians for reliever Andrew Miller.

It doesn’t seem likely the Yankees will have room for Frazier any time soon, though. Their outfield is set with Aaron Judge in right field, Aaron Hicks in center field and Brett Gardner in left field. Giancarlo Stanton rotates between the outfield corners and designated hitter.

“I’m looking forward to facing lefties, righties, whatever it is,” Frazier said. “Like I said the other night, I’m most excited to get back on the field with the guys, and feel better than I did whenever I debuted last year. It was a lot for me to get back to this moment. I’m just excited that I get to stay around for however long they keep me here and, like I said, make this really good team even better.”
