Did Yankees just tip who will start AL Wild Card Game?

The Yankees rearranged their starting rotation so that Sonny Gray will start Tuesday in Minnesota, but the move may have meant more for their future.

SEATTLE — Sonny Gray spoke of getting another opportunity. The Yankees pitcher, who’s been mostly disappointing since arriving in pinstripes last year, had not long ago learned he’d get another shot at starting after he was banished to the bullpen.

But Gray rejoining the Yankees’ rotation — for likely just one try — in Minnesota on Tuesday was far likely less about him and more about the future.

Particularly, the American League Wild Card Game.

The move rearranged the Yankees’ starting pitching order to where — at least for now — Luis Severino would be slated to start the team’s do-or-die postseason game Oct. 3.

It would also line him up to make starts against the Red Sox on Sept. 18 and Sep. 28.

Projecting Yankees’ 25-man roster

“It’s a chance to get everyone an extra day or two here or there and hopefully it’ll show its effects through the end of the season and into the postseason … a little fresher, a little sharper,” manager Aaron Boone said.

Boone better hope that’s the case.

Because Severino has been terrible lately.

Over his last 11 starts, he has a 6.83 ERA and a 4-5 record. He was crushed in 2 2/3 innings against the A’s his last time out, giving up five earned runs (and six total).

10 SQUARED: C Austin Romine hit his 10th HR of the season on Sat. at Seattle… the Yankees have tied a franchise record with 10 players with double-digit HRs this season (also 2012 and 1998)… are tied with Toronto for the highest total in the Majors… INF Neil Walker (9HR) and 1B Luke Voit (7HR w/ NYY) are both on pace to join them.
>> The Major League record is 11 players, done four times (2017 Astros, 2016 Twins, 2015 Astros, 2004 Tigers).

I LOVE THE 90’s: With their next win, the Yankees will secure their second consecutive 90-win season after winning fewer than 90 games in each season from 2013-16.
>> A win today would mark their quickest to 90 wins since they started 91-52 in 2009.
