The Yankees hit three more homers on Tuesday night in a 6-4 loss to the Texas Rangers.
ARLINGTON, Texas — Wonder what Yankees GM Brian Cashman was thinking back in New York on Tuesday night as he watched Texas Rangers left-hander Cole Hamels practically breeze through his club’s homer-happy lineup for seven innings.
This was really impressive stuff from Hamels because the Yankees have been as hot as they ever have and of late their offense has been doing the heavy lifting in history-making fashion.
Greg Bird could be back by this weekend | What it means
Come to think of it, this two-run, seven-inning outing looked like an audition by the four-time All-Star in a 6-4 Rangers win that handed the Yankees just their fourth loss in their last 26 games.
Nearing the end of his $144-million contract, Hamels probably will be dealt to someone by July 31 because his Rangers, already are 12 games under .500, likely will be trade-deadline sellers.
If the Yankees can make the money work, Hamels perhaps will be coming their way for prospects in the summer time to strengthen their rotation for another playoff run.
It’s apparent the Yankees could use help in their rotation.
While Hamels (3-4) was allowing just two solo homers and four hits while striking out seven, Yankees rookie right-hander Domingo German had serious struggles again filling in for injured No. 5 starter Jordan Montgomery.
Pitching on nine days rest, German (0-2) looked rusty for the second start in a row since he reeled off six no-hit innings facing Cleveland in his first big-league start on May 6.
German gave up a three-run homer to Rangers shortstop Jurickson Profar in the first inning and it was pretty much downhill from there in a six-run, 3 2/3-inning loss.
The Yankees’ biggest highlights were three more homers, which runs their total to 17 over their last four games.
Rookies Gleyber Torres and Miguel Andujar mashed solo shots off Hamels, and Austin Romine hit a two-run shot in the eighth facing Jake Diekman.
The Yankees finished one homer short of becoming the first team in Major League history to hit at least four homers four games in a row.
Unhappy with the strike zone, Yankees manager Aaron Boone was thrown out in the sixth inning after yelling something to plate umpire Pat Hoberg from the dugout after a high strike was called on Gary Sanchez.
After being ejected for the first time as a manger, Boone charged out of the Yankees dugout and screamed at Hoberg before leaving the field to head to his office.
Meantime, Sanchez had another rough night behind the plate, especially in the second inning when he couldn’t keep three wild pitches by German in front of him.
Worse yet, Sanchez might have tweaked something because he was pulled from the game before the Rangers hit in the sixth.
This stinker of an outing for German followed his six-run, five-inning no-decision against Oakland on May 12.
German’s latest off night also made it two bad starts in a row by Yankees starters, as Masahiro Tanaka wasn’t very good the night before giving up four runs over five innings in a winning effort.
We’ll find out next week if the Yankees stick with German because Montgomery still hasn’t resumed throwing from an elbow flexor strain issue that is expected to keep him sidelined for another 3-to-5 weeks.
NOTABLE
— The Yankees dropped to second place in the AL East a half-game behind Boston, which won 4-2 at Tampa Bay.
— First baseman Greg Bird was 0-for-3 with a walk in his second game for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He may be off the DL by Saturday or Sunday, Boone said.
