Hurricane Michael hit close to home for the Yankees.

Tampa has long been a Yankees stronghold, where the late owner George Steinbrenner built the team’s player development facilities and even had a high school named in his honor.

So, on Tuesday, the Yankees said they donated $100,000 to Hurricane Michael relief. Half will go to the American Red Cross. The other half will go to the Salvation Army, the team said.

“The devastation caused by Hurricane Michael in the Panhandle of Florida is overwhelming,” Yankees General Partner and Vice Chairperson Jennifer Steinbrenner Swindal said in a statement.

“Floridians are resilient and strong, and we want to offer our assistance and support in this time of serious need. We extend our deepest sympathies to the great many lives that have been impacted by the storm.”

The hurricane killed at least 16 people in Florida, most of them along the panhandle, according to the Associated Press.

From the AP:

The scope of the storm’s fury became clearer after nearly a week of missing-persons reports and desperate searches of the Florida Panhandle neighborhoods devastated by the most powerful hurricane to hit the continental U.S. in nearly 50 years.

The count of 16 dead was twice the number previously tallied by The Associated Press.

Emergency authorities said 12 of the deaths were in Bay County, where the storm slammed ashore with 155 mph (250 kph) winds and towering storm surge last Wednesday.

Bay County includes Mexico Beach, the ground-zero town of 1,000 people that was nearly obliterated, as well as Tyndall Air Force Base, Panama City and Lynn Haven, all of which were heavily damaged.
