NEW YORK — The Yankees have signed 18-year-old catcher Anthony Seigler, according to MLB.com’s Jim Callis.

Seigler, a switch-hitter, was also a switch-pitcher for his Cartersville, Ga., high school team. But the Yankees won’t have Seigler pitch as a pro — he’ll strictly catch.

Here’s what Yankees Vice President and Director of Amateur Scouting Damon Oppenheimer said about Seigler following the draft:

“The thing that attracts you to Seigler is that he has the tools to catch, and he’s a switch-hitter, which makes him a unique commodity. He’s showing power from both sides of the plate, has really great instincts for baseball, a plus-arm and runs well for a catcher. On top of that, he’s proven to be versatile, with his ability to play other positions,” Oppenheimer said. “Seigler’s got top-of-the-line makeup. We’re very happy about him.”

And here’s why Seigler won’t pitch in the pros, according to Oppenheimer:

“Not at this point,” Oppenheimer said. “At this point, we’re seeing him as a switch-hitting catcher. The versatility he has and he’s shown throughout his high school career is something that’s attractive to us but the development as a catcher is the key here and that’s what we’re working on.”

Seigler was the draft’s 23rd overall selection.
