How the Yankees could get even better — in Aaron Boone’s mind

BALTIMORE — Before Friday’s game against the Orioles at Camden Yards, the Yankees were in a nice spot.

They were the owners of baseball’s second-best record at 35-17 — 1 1/5 games behind the Red Sox in the American League East.

Still, two months into the season, manager Aaron Boone said he believes three are plenty of ways that the team could get better, and he outlined his biggest concerns.

Boone’s biggest worries:

Just continued health. Wanting to get more innings consistently out of our starters. But, yeah, I think it’s just managing the long haul of the season and trying to protect guys, trying to protect our pen as much as we can. Not overuse guys. Try and pick spots. Especially with the weather issues we’ve had. We want to protect guys knowing we have some double headers and stuff like that. All in all, I’m pleased with what we’re doing but it’s kind of like there are so many things in the margins to continue to improve on, to get better at, and if we’re going to be an elite club, those are things we always have to be hungry to be able to strive to get better at.

How the Yankees could improve:

We could be a better defensive club. We could be a better offensive club. I think one thing I harken on with this group, these guys are never satisfied. There’s a real hunger with which they play, with which they come to the yard and even though things have gone pretty well for the most part, everyone in that room understands that we can get better at every aspect still, and that’s still the expectation.
