How Yankees are dealing with forecast from hell

Things aren’t looking good for the Yankees and Nationals, who will try to play 1 1/2 games Wednesday despite lots of rain on the way.

WASHINGTON — The Yankees couldn’t finish the game Tuesday, so they’re going to try Wednesday.

The problem: Mother Nature doesn’t seem like she wants them to play then, either.

“Obviously,” manager Aaron Boone said, “the forecast we know doesn’t look great.”

Rain suspended the game between the Yankees and Nationals with the score tied at 3-all through 5 1/2 innings Tuesday at Nationals Park.

They’re going to try to restart the action where they left off at 5:05 p.m. Wednesday. After that game finishes, they’ll start the other game, originally scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

“So all we can do is hope that something breaks up for us and get prepared to hopefully start at 5 o’clock and hope that we can get a couple games in but obviously that’s out of our hands,” Boone said. “So, we’ll see.”

A few things you should know:

The forecast

From the National Weather Service

WEDNESDAY: A chance of showers before 11am, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 11am and 2pm, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 2pm. High near 76. East wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Low around 64. East wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Thursday isn’t an option

If the teams can’t make Wednesday work, they have a mutual off day Thursday. But that’s not happening, a Yankees official said. Boone said he was doubtful it would work that way, too.

“I think there’s hotel issues,” he said. “I think there’s all kinds of issues going on. My understanding is that if we don’t get it in, we’re going, but I’m sure those will be things they’ll work through over the next 24 hours if the weather doesn’t cooperate.”

Instead, the Yankees will travel to Kansas City for Friday’s game, and the Yankees and Nationals will pick another mutual off day to get the game-and-a-half in.

What’s the deal with the pitching?

The Yankees have CC Sabathia slated to pitch the 7:05 p.m. game. But who gets the ball when the Yankees and Nationals start back up the first game? Boone said the team was still working through that, but that it will be allowed to use a 26th player for the second game. So, count on a call up, and expect it to be a pitcher.

Boone’s take on the Yankees dealing with so many weather issues

The Yankees handled a two-hour, 45-minute delay on Sunday. They have had entire games postponed and many other weather-related delays.

“Part of being a big-leaguer, part of being a pro,” Boone said. “You have to deal with different things that come up and adversity. Whether it’s injuries or whether issues that we’ve had to face. That’s part of it. We’ve got to deal with it and our guys will be really good at dealing with whatever the circumstance is, whatever we’re thrown into.”
