Luis Severino becomes 12-game winner as Yankees shut out Phillies | Rapid reaction

The right-hander pitched seven innings, striking out nine and allowing just six hits as New York won for the second straight night in Philadelphia.

PHILADELPHIA – Luis Severino dominated the Phillies in a 6-0 Yankees win, out-pitching Jake Arrieta in a battle of top right-handers on Tuesday night.

The Yankees beat the Phillies for the second straight night, ending the Phillies’ streak of four consecutive series wins. The Yankees shut down the Phillies’ bats Monday as well in a 4-2 win.

Severino pitched seven shutout innings, allowing six hits. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out nine, including third baseman Maikel Franco for the final out of the seventh inning with runners on second and third, to become the major’s first 12-game winner.

Yankees bring buzz, fans to Philly

Adam Warren and Chasen Shreve pitched an inning each to finish off the shutout.

Arrieta was once again hurt by a leaky defense as part of his problems.

With the Yankees holding a 1-0 lead courtesy of Aaron Hicks’ leadoff home run in the first, they tacked on three unearned runs to blow the game open in the third.

With runners on first and second and one out, Didi Gregorious hit a tailor-made double play ball to second baseman Cesar Hernandez, but the flip to shortstop Scott Kingery was wide of the bag and instead of the inning being over the bases were loaded.

Arrieta almost escaped the jam unscathed when he struck out Giancarlo Stanton for the second out, but Gleyber Torres ripped a single past third baseman Maikel Franco to plate two runs and Greg Bird followed with a run-scoring single to make it 4-0.

Hicks added a sacrifice fly in the fourth and Gregorious didn’t need any help in the fifth, when he blasted a leadoff homer. Hicks, Stanton and Torres all had two hits.

Arrieta was done after five, allowing nine hits and six runs – three earned – with a walk and five strikeouts. He has allowed 14 unearned runs this season and continued a rough stretch.

Arrieta has given up 27 runs – 19 earned – in his five June starts after giving up more than two earned runs just once in April and May.

* TANAKA CLOSE: Right-hander Masahiro Tanaka pitched a bullpen session at the minor-league complex in Tampa Tuesday and could be on track to return before the All-Star break.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said everything went well in the 30-pitch session.

* GOING FOR THE SWEEP: The Yankees will send Luis Cessa (0-0, 3.00) to the mound for the series finale on Wednesday night, while the Phillies counter with Zach Eflin (5-2, 3.42).

CC Sabathia was originally slated to be Wednesday’s starter, but he was pushed back to Friday to open the key series against the Red Sox.
