The Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox meet in the American League Championship Series, beginning on Saturday, October 13, 2018 (10/13/18) at Fenway Park in Boston, Mass. The Los Angeles Dodgers and Milwaukee Brewers meet in the National League Championship Series, beginning Friday, October 12, 2018 (10/12/18) at Miller Park in Milwaukee, Wisc.
It’s too little, too late for the Yankees.
But Major League Baseball is benching umpire Angel Hernandez.
He became a lightning rod for controversy in the American League Division Series against the Red Sox.
In the 16-1 win by Boston in Game 3, Hernandez was working first base. Four of Hernandez’s calls in the first four innings went to replay challenge and three were overturned.
At one point, Hernandez turned to Yankees first baseman Luke Voit and said, “I’ll get the next one right.”
The next night, for Game 4, Hernandez was behind the plate.
Yankees starter CC Sabathia, who took the loss in the series-clinching 4-3 defeat, targeted Hernandez following the game.
“I don’t understand why he’s doing playoff games,” Sabathia said. “He’s terrible behind the plate. He was terrible at first base. It’s amazing how he’s getting a job to umpire in these playoff games.”
Good news, CC. Hernandez won’t be working either League Championship Series.
Here is the press release from MLB:
Major League Baseball today announced the umpires who have been assigned to the 2018 American League and National League Championship Series presented by the Google Assistant. The NLCS crew chief will be Gerry Davis, while the ALCS crew chief will be Joe West.
The NLCS crew led by Davis, who has worked an all-time high 144 Postseason games in his career, includes Scott Barry, regular season crew chief Brian Gorman, Alan Porter, Hunter Wendelstedt and Jim Wolf. Davis, Porter and Wolf all were on the field for the 2018 AL Wild Card Game along with Greg Gibson, who will start the series as the NLCS Replay Official.
West’s ALCS crew includes Vic Carapazza, Mark Carlson, Chris Guccione, James Hoye and regular season crew chief Mark Wegner. Guccione, Hoye and Wegner all called the 2018 NL Wild Card Game. Bill Miller, who was the crew chief for the 2018 NL Wild Card Game, will begin the series as the ALCS Replay Official.
Gibson (NLCS) and Miller (ALCS) will serve as the Replay Officials for Games One and Two of each LCS. Following each Game Two, Barry (NLCS) and Hoye (ALCS) will shift from on-field roles to Replay Official duties in their respective series, with Gibson and Miller joining each crew in left field for Game Three. The Replay Assistant for both League Championship Series will be Major League Umpire Paul Nauert.
