MLB playoffs 2018: Yankees’ CC Sabathia rips ‘terrible’ umpire Angel Hernandez

Yankees starting pitcher CC Sabathia rips umpire Angel Hernandez following a season-ending loss to the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium in Game 4 of the ALDS at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2018.

NEW YORK — Yankees starting pitcher CC Sabathia wants umpire Angel Hernandez ejected.

The tall lefty never wants to see Hernandez in a postseason game ever again.

“I don’t understand why he’s doing playoff games,” Sabathia said. “He’s terrible behind the plate. He was terrible at first base. It’s amazing how he’s getting a job to umpire in these playoff games.”

Sabathia ripped Hernandez following the Yankees’ season-ending 4-3 loss to the Red Sox in Game 4 of the American League Division Series at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night.

Who else shares Sabathia’s sentiment?

“Everybody,” he said. “I think if you go ask (the Red Sox) on the other side, too.”

Yankees studs & duds from Game 4

Sabathia wasn’t good Tuesday, giving up three runs in three innings in the loss, but he said Hernandez was “absolutely” not why the Yankees lost.

The 38-year-old just doesn’t like Hernandez on the same field as him.

“He’s always bad. He’s a bad umpire,” Sabathia said.

He added, “It’s just sad that he’s doing these (playoff) games. It’s crazy.”

Hernandez was a lightning rod all season.

His calls were challenged five times. Four of them were reversed.

Hernandez was particularly brutal at first base in Game 3, where replay challenges overturned three of his calls. At one point, he said to Voit, “”I’ll get the next one right.”

YES analyst John Flaherty, a former Yankees catcher, ripped Hernandez, too, after Game 3.

“I think back to the replay of the Luke Voit play at first base, that Angel Hernandez actually got right,” Flaherty said, via an email from the YES Network. “And when he came back, next to Voit, he (Hernandez) made a little comment to him (Voit), and smiled a little bit, almost like, you know, ‘I got one right.’

“It’s not that funny, Angel.  These are playoff games.  These are big deals.  And replay bails him out; the play eventually is going to be right.  But you gotta be thinking at first base, maybe take a little more pride in what you’re doing.”
