MLB rumors: Ex-Yankees manager Joe Girardi running out of options for 2019 | Holding out for Cubs, White Sox? (UPDATE)

Former New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi wants to return to the dugout. The Los Angeles Angels replaced Mike Scioscia with Brad Ausmus and the Cincinnati Reds replaced Bryan Price with David Bell. The Minnesota Twins, Baltimore Orioles, Toronto Blue Jays and Texas Rangers are still looking for managers for 2019.

UPDATE: Fancred’s Jon Heyman reports Joe Girardi pulled out of consideration for the manager job with the Texas Rangers and is holding out for a chance with the Cubs or White Sox:

Two down, four to go.

That’s the situation facing former Yankees manager Joe Girardi, who watched the Cincinnati Reds and Los Angeles Angels hire new managers over the weekend.

The Reds hired David Bell, but only after Girardi reportedly removed himself from contention for the job.

Per The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal:

Joe Girardi was #Reds‘ top choice for manager, but has withdrawn himself from consideration for position, sources tell The Athletic. Will remain with @MLBNetwork for now. Still wants to manage again.

The Los Angeles Angels found their replacement for Mike Scioscia, hiring former Tigers manager Brad Ausmus.

Girardi was never in the discussion (at least publicly) for the Angels job.

That still leaves four teams looking for new skippers for 2019.

The Texas Rangers are replacing Jeff Banister, and reportedly interviewed Girardi earlier this month.

Per the Chicago Tribune:

Girardi, the former Yankees and Marlins manager, was the first person with big-league managerial experience interviewed by the Rangers as they look to replace fired manager Jeff Banister.

People familiar with the details said the Rangers interviewed Girardi in Arlington, Texas. The team is making no public comments about the first round of managerial interviews.

The Minnesota Twins fired Hall of Famer Paul Molitor, and are looking at a pair of former Yankees to replace him, but neither one is Girardi.

Two American League East clubs are looking for new skippers as well: the Baltimore Orioles (Buck Showalter) and Toronto Blue Jays (John Gibbons).
