MLB trade rumors: Reds, A’s want Yankees’ Sonny Gray | ‘Multiple offers on the table’

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman is looking to trade right-hander Sonny Gray, who has failed since coming over in a 2017 trade with the Oakland A’s. The Cincinnati Reds and Oakland A’s are interested in trading for Gray, who finished the 2018 season in the bullpen.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman figures to make at least one trade during the offseason.

This deal would be considered addition by subtraction.

Cashman is looking to dump right-hander Sonny Gray, who failed to live up to his potential following the 2017 non-waiver trade deadline with the Oakland A’s.

Believe it or not, Cashman isn’t having a problem finding suitors, per SNY’s Andy Martino:

The Yankees have multiple offers on the table for RHP Sonny Gray and are in the process of weighing them, according to major league sources.

Per MLB.com’s Jon Morosi:

As #Yankees and #Reds discuss a Sonny Gray trade, one would expect Yankees to ask for Cincinnati’s top shortstop prospect, given injury to Didi Gregorius. His name: Jeter Downs. (Alas, Jeter spent this year in the Midwest League and probably isn’t ready to fill in at @MLB level.)

Sources: #Yankees, #Athletics have had contact about a deal that would send Sonny Gray back to Oakland, but there is no present momentum in talks. Oakland is looking for pitching and clearly comfortable bringing back former A’s (Cahill, Anderson, et al). @MLB @MLBNetwork

Latest MLB rumors

Gray is 15-16 with a 4.51 ERA since coming over from the A’s. By the end of the 2018 season, he had been banished to the bullpen and finished with a 11-9 record and 4.90 ERA.

Cashman tipped his hand about Gray during the GM Meetings earlier this month, per NJ Advance Media’s Brendan Kuty:

“I think it’s probably best to try this somewhere else,” Cashman said of Gray.

“This environment can bring out the best in certain individuals,” the GM said. “It can bring out, obviously, the worst in certain individuals. This is a unique environment.”

“Someone, if they trade for him, is going to get the player that we wanted,” Cashman said.

He added, “It hasn’t worked out this far. I think he’s extremely talented. I think that we’ll enter the winter unfortunately open minded to a relocation. Probably to maximize his abilities would be more likely best somewhere else. But then it comes down to the final decision of the price in terms of trade acquisition and matching up with somebody, if we match up.”
