Ex-Yankees manager Joe Girardi ‘would listen to anything’ to get back in the dugout

The Yankees let manager Joe Girardi go following the 2017 season, which ended with a Game 7 loss to the Houston Astros in the ALCS. Girardi spent 10 seasons as Yankees manager, leading the club to the World Series title in 2009. In February, he joined MLB Network as an analyst.

That former Yankees manager Joe Girardi says he wants to be back in the dugout for a MLB team should not shock anyone.

That he would be willing to return in a capacity other than manager is a bit of a surprise.

Girardi said as much on Monday in an interview with the New York Daily News, when asked if he wanted to be a big-league manager again:

“No, that hasn’t changed. I loved every minute of it. I’ve had a chance to do it 11 years in my life (10 seasons with the Yankees and one with the Marlins). I’d like to do it again,” Girardi told The News.

But Girardi added he wouldn’t be opposed to considering an offer to work for a team in another capacity besides managing. Ruben Amaro Jr., the former Phillies‘ GM, is now the first base coach for the Mets.

“I would definitely listen. I love just being around the game, because it’s what I’ve grown up doing my whole life. I’m not just married to managing,” said Girardi. “I would listen to anything, but I would like to manage again.”

Yanks’ 5 biggest problems

The Yankees parted ways with Girardi after the 2017 season, which ended with a Game 7 loss to the Houston Astros in the ALCS.

Girardi spent 10 seasons as the Yankees skipper and led the club to victory in the 2009 World Series.

In February, Girardi joined MLB Network as an analyst.

“I’m really excited to join MLB Network and to have a chance to talk about the game that I love so much,” Girardi said in a statement the network released.
