MLB rumors: Mets trading Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard would ‘plumb new depths to their foolishness’

The New York Mets are in fourth place in the National League East, meaning general manager Sandy Alderson will be looking to sell before the July 31, 2018 (7/31/18) non-waiver trade deadline. Will he be willing to part with aces Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard?

It’s not even officially summer (it begins on Thursday) and the Mets can already forget about the Fall Classic.

The 2018 Mets are going nowhere … fast. They’re stuck in fourth place in the National League East, behind the Braves, Nationals and Phillies.

All of those clubs, by the way, could be looking to add to their roster before the July 31st non-waiver trade deadline.

The question for the Mets is: should they sell, or should they stand pat and try to build around their core?

That core consists of two of the best pitchers in baseball: Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard.

Why Yanks should trade Andujar for deGrom

DeGrom is having a Cy Young-caliber season, leading the majors with a ridiculous 1.51 ERA.

Certainly, Mets general manager Sandy Alderson could get quite a haul for one or both of his right-handed studs. Just imagine what Yankees GM Brian Cashman might be willing to give up in exchange for deGrom. Perhaps a package built around Miguel Andujar and/or Justus Sheffield?

But SI’s Tom Verducci doesn’t think that’s the way the Mets should go, and he’s not bashful with his opinion:

The Mets have made many dumb moves in recent years, but even entertaining the idea of trading Jacob deGrom and/or Noah Syndergaard would plumb new depths to their foolishness.

The Mets hold five more combined years of control on deGrom and Syndergaard–that’s about 135 starts after this season. One of the most valuable commodities in this game is a young, controllable, front-of-the-rotation pitcher. The Mets have two of them.

The minute you trade a commodity like that is when you begin searching for a commodity to replace it. Good luck.

You better have impact players on the mound and in the lineup to win. The Mets at least have two of them now. And there are no guarantees that trading either one for “a package” of players will leave them better off.
