MLB trade rumors: Yankees see Rangers’ Cole Hamels’ price dropping?

The MLB non-waiver trade deadline is July 31, 2018 (7/31/18). Texas Rangers left-hander Cole Hamels is one of the best starting pitchers on the market, along with Toronto Blue Jays’ left-hander J.A. Happ, Detroit Tigers right-hander Michael Fulmer, and Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Chris Archer.

Texas Rangers southpaw Cole Hamels could be moving to the discount rack before the July 31st non-waiver trade deadline.

The Chicago White Sox pounded Hamels on Sunday, to the tune of seven runs on nine hits in five innings of work.

That’s the second straight clunker for Hamels, who lasted just five innings his previous start on June 25th, giving up four runs to the San Diego Padres.

For those of you scoring at home, that’s an ERA of 9.90 in his last two starts. Ouch.

For the season, Hamels is 4-7 with a 4.05 ERA.

The 34-year-old lefty is one of the best pitchers available in what’s been called a “weak” trade market.

Yankees prospects A to Z

Several teams, including the Yankees, will be looking to upgrade their starting pitching before the trade deadline.

Other names in consideration by playoff contenders (including the Yankees) are Toronto Blue Jays lefty J.A. Happ, Detroit Tigers right-hander Michael Fulmer and Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Chris Archer.

There would also be a huge market for Jacob deGrom and/or Noah Syndergaard if the Mets hold a fire sale.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has made it known he is shopping for starting pitching. Masahiro Tanaka is coming back from a pair of bum hamstrings. Jordan Montgomery is out for the season because of Tommy John surgery. Sonny Gray is at the best unreliable and at the worst a complete disaster.

Cashman has already said he has no plans to trade Gleyber Torres for pitching. He is also reluctant to use Clint Frazier to upgrade the starting rotation.
