MLB trade rumors: Yankees dealing away disappointing Sonny Gray?

One year after dealing for Sonny Gray, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman could flip him before the 2018 MLB trade deadline on July 31, 2018 (7/31/18).

Sonny Gray’s days with the Yankees could be numbered.

The 2017 MLB trade deadline big-ticket acquisition has been a major disappointment in pinstripes and a major part of the reason why the current team is short on high-end impact starting pitching.

But while an upgrade around Gray has been the talk around the Yankees all season, perhaps Gray could soon depart as his replacement(s) arrive.

According to Jon Heyman of Fancred Sports, some around the game believe the Yankees will try to trade Gray away.

Some believe the Yankees will consider trading Sonny Gray a year after acquiring him. He has struggled this year, and especially so at Yankee Stadium. Some believe it’s either the stadium, or the city, that doesn’t agree with him, and that he’d do much better elsewhere.

As for where Gray could land, the pitching-needy Brewers could be a fit.

If Sonny Gray really is available, it is worth noting the Brewers were runners-up for Gray a year ago. And also that their pitching coach Derek Johnson was Gray’s pitching coach at Vanderbilt.

Gray, 28, owns an ugly 5.46 ERA in 18 starts this season. Those starts include a career-worst strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.18) and WHIP (1.511). The former Athletics ace is under team control through the end of the 2019 season.

Wheeler to Bronx?

Last July, the Yankees sent top prospects Jorge Mateo, James Kaprielian and Dustin Fowler to Oakland to land Gray for what was supposed to be three pennant chases in pinstripes.
