The Boston Red Sox. The New York Yankees.

It doesn’t get any better than this.

Longtime storied and bitter rivals will meet in postseason for a fourth time, a first in a best-of-five series. The others were all best-of-seven. The last time the Red Sox and Yankees squared off in a playoff matchup was 14 years ago.

New York won the 1999 AL Championship Series 4-1 over Boston before both teams had pair of epic ALCS struggles back-to-back years in 2003 and 2004. New York won a heated 2003 classic at home on an extra-inning homer in Game 7 by Aaron Boone, now the team’s rookie manager, off Tim Wakefield.

The next year, David Ortiz, Curt Schilling and Johnny Damon led the Red Sox to an unprecedented comeback from a 3-0 deficit with a Game 7 win at Yankee Stadium. Boston went on to win World Series for the first time in 86 years.

Both teams also played the famous regular-season tiebreaker for 1978 AL East title at Fenway Park after New York made up a huge deficit in the standings down the stretch. A go-ahead home run by light-hitting shortstop Bucky Dent over the Green Monster in left field helped the Yankees rally to win and on the way to a second consecutive World Series crown.

Here are some news and notes heading into the series:

– These division rivals are 57-57 head to head since 2013.

– Boston skipper Alex Cora is also in his first year as a major league manager.

– The Red Sox essentially put away the Yankees in AL East race this year with four-game sweep at Fenway Park in early August. New York took two of three in Boston to close the regular season, but the Red Sox had already wrapped up home-field advantage throughout the postseason. A victory in the series opener clinched home field in the wild card game for Yankees.

– Last year, Boston ended its regular season against Houston before both teams met in the playoffs. The Astros eliminated the Red Sox en route to a World Series championship.

– The Yankees are 7-0 at home in the postseason the past two years.

– The Yankees hit a major league-record 267 home runs this season but aren’t much of a threat on the bases with only 63 steals.
