Report: Yankees won’t trade Gleyber Torres, Miguel Andujar for Mets’ Jacob deGrom

Yankees are hoping to improve starting rotation before July 31 trade deadline.

NEW YORK — The Yankees are on the hunt for another ace to team up with Luis Severino and the rumor mill is heating up that GM Brian Cashman is making a run at Mets righty Jacob deGrom.

The rumors also have the Yankees possibly giving up their two rookie stars to get the National League ERA leader, third baseman Miguel Andujar and second baseman Gleyber Torres.

What under-the-radar Yankees prospect thinks of his big shot

According to Jon Heyman of FanRag, a Yankees official doubts the Mets ever would trade deGrom to their crosstown rival while adding that any deal won’t include Andujar and/or Torres.

If Torres and Andujar are untouchable, the Yankees would have to try to build a deal around their stock farm system, but it’s believed the Mets are looking for Major League ready young talent.

Possible names to come up with trade talks include high A Tampa center fielder Estevan Florial and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre left-hander Justus Sheffield, the Yankees’ top two prospects.

deGrom, 29, is having a great season, as he’s 4-2 with a 1.55 ERA in 14 starts with 113 strikeouts in 87 1/3 innings.

The Mets may trade deGrom to get younger because it’s become clear that they aren’t going to contend this season. Heading into Thursday, the Mets’ 28-36 record had them fourth in the National League East and 9 1/2 games behind the first-place Atlanta Braves and also 8 1/2 games out of the second NL Wild Card spot.

The Yankees have a Major League-best 43-29 record heading into a four-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays that begins Thursday night at Yankee Stadium.
