This veteran star ready to retire if Yankees win the World Series

If the Yankees win it all, at least one member of the team will be ready to hang ’em up.

You know things are good for a team when this kind of story pops up in May.

For the Yankees things are, well, as good as you can possibly imagine. With 15 wins in 16 games, no team in the sport is hotter. As a series with the first-place Red Sox looms, we could soon be looking at the Yankees holding baseball’s best record.

Hype around this particular Yankees team started early. From last year’s ALCS loss to Houston to this year’s spring training, it wasn’t hard to see what was forming: A dominant team capable of winning it all in 2018.

If that dream comes true in the Bronx, it could mean the end of what’s been an excellent Yankees career for C.C. Sabathia.

In a conversation with the New York Post, Sabathia confirmed that he’s playing for one more ring–and would have bowed out of the sport if the Yankees magical run ended with a parade last season.

“I want one more parade and pretty sure that will be it,” Sabathia told The Post. “I thought I had it last year.”

Asked if he would have retired had the Yankees gotten by the Astros in Game 7 of the ALCS, which he started, and beaten the Dodgers in the World Series, Sabathia said that would have been the end of what has been a Hall of Fame worthy career.

“That’s what you play for,” the 37-year-old Sabathia said of winning another World Series title before retiring and enjoying his family. “But you got to get it first.”

Mailbag: Gardner hears Frazier’s footsteps?

While Sabathia may be mentally ready to go home, his arm is telling a different story this season on the mound. The veteran lefty owns a 1.39 ERA across six starts for a team that sports a 24-10 record.

Sabathia holds a 122-73 mark with a 3.70 ERA since joining the Yankees prior to the 2009 season.
