BALTIMORE — Is Yankees‘ season-long slumper Greg Bird on the verge of losing his starting first base job to Friday night hero Luke Voit?

One great night won’t do it, but Voit certainly earned more chances while being a hero of the Yankees’ series-opening 7-5, 10-inning win over the Baltimore Orioles.

Watch our post-game video from Yankees manager Aaron Boone above and you’ll get a feel for the excitement he had seeing Voit have a breakout game.

Starting because Bird’s season average dropped to .202 with his 0-for-10 this week in two games in Miami, Voit was 3-for-5 with two homers and four RBI hitting in the seven hole.

Voit hit a game-tying, two-run homer in the fourth inning off Orioles starter Alex Cobb, then added another two-run blast in the 10th off reliever Cody Carroll after the Yankees had pulled ahead on a Neil Walker solo shot.

The four-RBI night was the best night of Voit’s young career, as the 27-year-old had just five homers in 77 games over two seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals (2017-18) and Yankees heading into the weekend.

“It’s awesome,” Voit said. “It’s nice to finally get some at-bats and everything felt great. It was fun and exciting with Walker hitting that (homer) to go ahead and me doing that too, it makes baseball so fun. I’m having a great time with these guys.”

PROSPECT SPOTLIGHT
Tyler Nunez, a C from Lake Nona HS, is a 6'2 190lb athletic catcher who provides strength with the bat and glove. During BP, Tyler stuck with a middle of the field approach while staying on a line. He impacted the ball well with his compact and direct path, T90EV. He showed off his real athleticism behind the plate by posting a 2.04 pop time while staying around the bag on every throw. He is a good looking athletic uncommitted catcher to keep an eye on.
