Mike Francesa is joining Twitter, he announced Wednesday during his WFAN sports talk radio show. There will be a real Mike Francesa Twitter account that I will use,” he said on WFAN.
Mike Francesa is getting verified.
The WFAN host announced Wednesday he will have his own Twitter account by “late Friday.” It’s a somewhat surprising development considering the sports radio titan has often dismissed the idea of joining the social media platform
“There will be a real Mike Francesa Twitter account that I will use, I will make comments on,” Francesa said. “It will be me, and no one else.”
Francesa said he plans to tweet frequently, although he indicated he does not plan to respond to tweets sent his way. “I don’t see how I could do that in terms of time … it’s just impossible to do,” he said, adding he has thought about joining Twitter for some time, and has now been talked into it by others.
What we learned from Mike Francesa’s first day back at WFAN
Francesa said Twitter told him there “80” accounts already in his name or alluding to him that are not in fact him (the most prominent one being the highly-popular @MikeFrancesaNY parody account) already on the site, but he said he wasn’t sure if that number is accurate.
Francesa indicated his yet-to-be-revealed official handle has been determined, and Twitter is assisting him in the imminent launch of the account. Francesa said any of his show’s official social media accounts will be operated by his staff, while his Twitter account will be run solely by him.
“I will be using it this weekend,” Francesa said. “That will be started.”
Francesa added plans for his much-hyped Mike’s On app are moving “steadily ahead,” and “our timetable is very good.”
“We will be ready (with the app) for the football season,” he said. “It’ll be open before that, mid-August.”
