Don La Greca rants about ‘false narrative’ WFAN’s Mike Francesa is ‘crushing’ ESPN’s ‘Michael Kay Show’

Don La Greca says he doesn’t care about Mike Francesa, his WFAN show or if people would rather listen to him instead of ESPN Radio New York’s “The Michael Kay Show.” But the host went on an epic rant Thursday, blasting what he says is a “false narrative” that Francesa’s show is “crushing” Kay, La Greca and Peter Rosenberg’s three-man show while going at local media.

Don La Greca says he doesn’t care about Mike Francesa, his show or if people would rather listen to him instead of “The Michael Kay Show.”

But if so, La Greca has an interesting way of demonstrating it.

The ESPN Radio New York host went on an epic rant Thursday, blasting what he says is a “false narrative” that Francesa’s WFAN show is “crushing” Kay, La Greca and Peter Rosenberg’s three-man show while going at local media.

You can hear the highlights in the video below courtesy of Funhouse. But the cliffnotes of La Greca’s eruption:

* La Greca admits Francesa is beating the Kay show in the ratings, but he insists there are other “facts” people must know, and he names a few. La Greca claims Yankee day game broadcasts boost Francesa’s ratings, and the Kay show has “more of a young audience that podcasts us and streams us,” and therefore doesn’t count toward the traditional ratings.

La Greca also says the show’s YES Network simulcast is beating the ratings Francesa’s former YES simulcast used to get, as well as when “Mike and the Mad Dog” was simulcast on the network.

May ratings: Big return for the big guy

* La Greca then claimed those facts “are the stuff Neil Best refuses to write about,” referring to the venerable Newsday sports media columnist, and that “this is the stuff the mongos are afraid to bring up,” a reference to Francesa’s “Mongo Nation” fanbase. He also seemed to accuse Best of “trolling” the Kay show.

“Know the facts,” La Greca screamed. “Don’t let the yo-yos that write their own narrative, because they got their head up [Francesa’s] butt. Learn the facts, ask us the facts. Because I’ll tell you the facts. He is beating us, but let them know about the Yankee games during the day, let them know about the streaming, let them know about the podcasts. Let them know we’re killing it on YES. … Print that. Tweet that.”

After La Greca finished up his rant, a caller dialed up Francesa to get his response to La Greca “having not nice things” about him.

“I don’t talk about other shows. I’ve never spent 10 minutes with the guy in my life, so I don’t know why he’d have things to say about me,” Francesa said. “But that’s up to him. I could (not) care less. It means nothing to me.”
