What angry David Robertson said after Yankees blow game to Rangers

Robertson walked in a run and gave up a three-run triple in the sixth inning of the Yankees’ 12-10 loss to the Texas Rangers on Wednesday night.

ARLINGTON, Texas Yankees reliever David Robertson was fed up with himself after Wednesday night’s 12-10 loss to the Texas Rangers.

His club was up three runs when he was brought into a two-on, one-out jam in the sixth inning, and four batters later the Yankees were trailing.

Who will and won’t be options if German’s struggles continue

“I really just screwed it all up,” he said. “I just couldn’t make any good pitches and we lost the game because of it.”

One of baseball’s best setup man, Robertson was tagged with a blown save and the loss this time.

Robertson walked the first two batters he faced to force in a run, then after getting a strikeout for the second out of Rangers sixth, Jurickson Profar hit a mistake pitch over Aaron Judge’s head in right-center for a three-run double that put Texas ahead 11-10.

“I was behind in the count again (facing Profar) and I tried to put a good fastball down and away,” Robertson said. “If I locate my pitch, it might be an out.

“Instead I left it in the middle of the plate and he put a good swing on it and it ended up in the gap, and all the runners scored.”

And the Rangers had the lead for good in a game the Yankees had been up 4-0 after 3 1/2 innings, 10-5 after 4 1/2 and 10-7 heading to the home sixth.

“I pitched like crap,” Robertson added. “There’s nothing else to say about it. I’ve been very poor.”

Surprisingly, Robertson has been inconsistent this season, as his ERA through 22 outings is 4.91 with 12 runs allowed in 22 innings.

We’ve seen Robertson pitch much better on a regular basis … when he came up as a Yankee in 2008 and stayed through 2014, and especially last year after he returned in a July 19 Yankees-White Sox trade. He was a sensational 9-2 with 1.84 ERA overall last season, including 5-0 with a 1.03 in 30 games as a Yankee.

Robertson’s 2018 season started very badly, as he had a brutal second outing in Toronto. How can we forget him opting to walk righty Josh Donaldson intentionally to load the bases for hot switch-hitter Justin Smoak with the Yanks up a run in the eighth, then blowing the game by serving up a grand slam?

Robertson strung together mostly good outings after that for more than a month, with an exception here and there, but he’s been struggling again of late. In his last four outings, he’s allowed six runs over 3 2/3 innings on three hits and, uncharacteristically, six walks.

“I haven’t thrown a lot of strikes,” Robertson said. “I walk guys and they score. I’d like to turn things around and get some clean innings going, but I’m going through a rough patch right now. I need to clean up my act.”
