Why Mets’ Todd Frazier talked smack to Yankees’ Luis Severino before hitting deciding homer

Third baseman Todd Frazier hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning to account for the only runs in the Mets’ 2-0 Subway Series win over the Yankees at Citi Field on Sunday, June 10, 2018 (6/10/18).

NEW YORK — The offensive star of the Mets’ 2-0 win over the Yankees on Sunday night, Todd Frazier had to do some quick daddy duties before bringing out his usual A game in his post-game interview.

After winning pitcher Seth Lugo and reliever Robert Gsellman did some talking, the Met who accounted for all of the game’s runs with a fifth-inning homer off Yankees ace Luis Severino reemerged into the home clubhouse at Citi Field.

Frazier walked slowly toward his locker holding hands with his four-year son.

Wearing an oversized Mets cap, little Blake Frazier plopped his fanny onto a comfy-looking sofa and then reached up for his dad’s cell phone.

“What do you want to play?” The ToddFather asked.

“Spiderman,” the boy responded.

The third baseman cued up the game on his cell, handed it over to Blake and then finished up his night’s work in the form of an entertaining interview that included him scooping everyone that he engaged in some smack talk with Severino before and during this Subway Series finale.

Why Betances credits bullpen coach for his revival

The post-game fun began when Frazier, a Yankee for the second half of last season, was asked if starring in this win was extra enjoyable because he beat one of his former clubs.

“Oh, without a doubt,” Frazier excitedly shot back. “Playing against your buddies over there, I was joking around trying to get in Severino’s head a little bit before the game when he was walking out there. All good stuff. If you’re not having fun, there’s a problem.”

As Yankees fans found out last season, Frazier is all about fun.

“When you’re facing a guy like (Severino), you’ve got to find a way to get after that, so I was trying every which way,” Frazier said. “Luckily, I got those two runs in.”

What was said before the game to Severino, who allowed two runs over five innings and suffered his second loss in 11 decisions?

“I can’t really repeat that,” Frazier said with a smile. “There was a lot of curse words into that … in a fun way. But I just told him, ‘I’m going to be on you all day, baby! Be ready!’ It was that kind of stuff.”

Severino fired back walking off the mound after the Mets third when he crossed paths with Frazier, who was stranded at second base after reaching on a line single to right and stealing second.

“He basically was making fun of the way that I got that single … reaching out,” Frazier said. “I said, ‘I’ll take that every day of the week. Keep talking.’ Then I got the home run.”

With Severino and Mets starter Seth Lugo matching zeros, Jose Reyes singled with two outs in home fifth, then Frazier followed with a homer to left-center on a 1-2 hanging slider that was just above the knees and across the middle of the plate.

“One of those sliders that he threw just hung up a little longer,” said Frazier, who is hitting .239 with seven homers and 24 RBIs in 37 games. “He’s dominate, so when you get a pitch like that you have to drive it, and I just got lucky and did my job.”

Frazier thinks the Mets set the tone for eventually getting to Severino in the first inning. They didn’t score, but two walks and several long at-bats led to Severino throwing 31 pitches in the inning.

“That was big,” Frazier said. “Even though I struck out, I said, ‘That’s fine.’ Everybody was still kind of fired up. Thirty-one pitches are a lot. That can weigh down any pitcher.

“As we saw, (Severino) was dominate still, but it was one pitch (that was a mistake) and I’m glad it was to me.”
