Why the Yankees are about to get scarier — without a trade

The Yankees have been without Gleyber Torres and Gary Sanchez. Here’s why that could change — very soon.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Yankees will be back to full strength soon.

Second baseman Gleyber Torres said he’s over his right hip strain and that he should get off the 10-day disabled list next week.

The Yankees host the Mets over the weekend before heading to Tampa to face the Rays on Monday.

“I’m better,” he said during the 2018 MLB All-Star media availability at Nationals Park on Monday. “I’m better right now. I feel super pretty good. I think I’ll be back next week.”

Torres exercised in the outfield Monday afternoon. He expects to work out again Tuesday afternoon but he won’t play in what would have been his first All-Star Game.

The 21-year-old’s imminent return will be big for the Yankees, who have been using the light-hitting Tyler Wade and Neil Walker in Torres’ place since he went on ice on July 5.

Torres had been dealing with the hip issue for a while before he got pulled from a game after stretching it during an at-bat.

The Yankees also expect catcher Gary Sanchez (groin strain) to get off the disabled list Friday. Sanchez began his rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday.

Torres has had a remarkable rookie season. Before the year, he was ranked No. 6 overall in Baseball America’s top 100 prospects list.

Since coming up April 22, Torres, a Venezuela native, has hit .294 with 15 homers, 42 RBI and a .905 OPS in 63 games while playing a solid second base. Torres is a natural shortstop.
