Why Yankees’ Aaron Boone wore his uniform top for the 1st time

Yankees manager Aaron Boone wore his uniform top for the first time this season in a 8-5 win over the Braves at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday.

NEW YORK — If you didn’t recognize who was taking starting pitcher Domingo German out of Tuesday’s 8-5 win over the Braves, don’t sweat it.

There was something strange about Aaron Boone.

For the first time as a manager, Boone wore his uniform top.

What gives?

“I’ve been flirting with it for a while now,” Boone said before Wednesday’s game against Atlanta at Yankee Stadium.

He had been asked by the YES Network’s Michael Kay.

“I had your voice in my head because you occasionally ask me when I’m going to wear it,” Boone said.

“So, I decided yesterday a good day to don it.”

Would he wear it again Wednesday, going back to back?

“Let’s not get carried away,” he said.

Boone typically wears the uniform pants and a short-sleeve pullover. He took over as Yankees manager this season after Joe Girardi was let go following a 10-year stint guiding the team.

9 Yankees who served the military

A few notes going into Wednesday’s game:

FIRST HALF FRENZY: With OF Aaron Hicks hitting his 15th home run of the season on Tuesday, the Yankees now have five players with at least 15HR prior to the All-Star break for the first time in franchise history (also Judge-23HR, Stanton-20HR, Gregorius-15HR and Torres-15HR).

  •  The Yankees are the Majors’ only club to have five players each with at least 15HR…join Boston as the only two teams to have six players each with at least 40RBI (Gregorius, Hicks, Judge, Sanchez, Stanton and Torres).

STANTON ISLAND: OF Giancarlo Stanton hit his 20th HR of the season on Tuesday, becoming the 11th player ever to hit at least 20HR in at least each of his first nine Major League seasons…only Mark Teixeira (first 13 seasons, 2003-15) and Albert Pujols (first 12 seasons, 2001-12) have accomplished the feat since 2000.

  •  Is one of two players with at least 20HR in each of the last nine seasons (since 2010), joining Nelson Cruz.
  •  Is hitting .390 (16-for-41) with 6R, 4 doubles, 2HR, 6RBI and 4BB in his last 10 games (since 6/23).
  •  Is tied for second in the Majors with 10HR vs. LHP (in 86AB).
